I know everyone has been holding their breath waiting for me to write about our trip. Well wait no more, here is our tale of “survival in the wild”.
Sat morning, we still had to pack all the necessities, toilet paper, lotion and blah blah.
We finally left the house at 12 p/m.
It took us about an hour to reach there.
Met with the guy from REI. I took out my lawn chair and plonked my ass on it, while sipping a soda. NK then set up both tents. The girls meanwhile were gorging themselves on bananas and oranges because they never get that at home.
So, at abt 3p/m, someone else comes and asks us, “whether we wanted to go on a hike”. We decided against it because the kids were just busy throwing rocks and playing in the dirt.
At 5 in the evening, we went to the main camp. The REI staff had already started cooking dinner. The girls helped arranged the vegetables and then spooned some of canned soup and threw that on the fire. Main dish was spaghetti with meatballs. And *gasp* they had premium roast coffee. I dont know but everything tasted absolutely heavenly.
For dessert, there was a vanilla and chocolate cake. And of course, smores. I had seen smores on TV, read about it in books. But to actually taste one was *hmmmm*
The kids had a blast roasting the marshmallows.
So dinner took about 2 hours. We cleaned, washed the dishes. And then we went on a flashlight hike. I put Neil in the stroller and stuck to the main road, NK and the girls went off in the woods. The girls saw elk poop and little bugs and wild flowers. But if you were to listen to them, it seemed like they found $100 bill.
By the time the hike was over, everyone was exhausted. I cleaned the girls up and arranged them in their sleeping bags. Both girls started snoring right away. Neil and Nk were in the smaller tent.
I was a bit uncomfortable in the sleeping bag and on the hard ground. I barely slept plus I had visions of bear attacking and ripping our tents apart. It also got chilly and I kept trying to make sure the girls were warm and such. I know NK felt really cold in the other tent. But he said Neil was warm and snug all the time
Opps I forgot a tiny detail. Right after lunch, Nk took Neil to change his diaper in the van. he then shouts for me and when I get there, what do I see. WE HAD A FLAT TYRE. There was a screw in the tyre. One of the other campers was really nice and helped NK change the flat.
The next morning, I was up at 630a/m. Everyone else in my family was still snoring away. I washed up and went to the main camp. Again HOT COFFEE. I had a cup and had my breakfast in peace, pancakes and syrup with scrambled eggs and HOT COFFEE. I had a nice conversation with one of the other moms who was there with her 5 yr old.
Finally, I decided to wake everyone up at 825a/m. And they had breakfast. After that, NK took down the tents. We spent some time getting to know the family that had camped beside us. their girls were exactly the same age as ours. We exchanged contact details and she said she would love to go camping with us. I am not sure though, having someone else cook is wonderful.I dont think I am ready to do it myself.
By 11a/m, everything was loaded in the car and unpacked. There was going to be another hike but we decided to head home.
I really enjoyed our experience in the wild. The girls loved it too and want to know when we are going again, NK’s big complain was that he couldn’t sleep well because of the hard ground and the cold. I am going to make sure I will sign up for next year’s REI camp

Good for you, Sunita! I’m glad you enjoyed yourself in the beautiful Rockies, though I can’t believe this is the extent of your raving about s’mores. Dang!
that’s great you had a good time! The last and only time dh and I went camping, I was nearly 9 mo. pg and we used an airmattress so it was much easier to sleep.
Sound like lots of fun! I’m a bit of a comfort queen and sleeping on the hard cold ground is not for me.
I’m so glad you had a great time!!! I despise camping. The Holiday Inn Express is about the extent that I like to “rough it.” Good for you for playing along – pregnant and all. You’re my hero.
That’s great! You know, I can’t sleep on the hard ground either when camping and we invested in one of those air mattresses. It blows up in just a few minutes with a battery operated air pump. Then, when packing up to leave it sucks all the air out of it in just minutes too. It was a life saver!!! I highly recommend it. I think it was only like $30-40.00 at Walmart.
I am very impressed. Add me to the non campers club, all though I do have to say that hearing about how much fun you all had is softening my heart. But then I think about sleeping on the ground and I’m done with camping again.
