Girly Girl Stuff

I am not a girly girl. I dont use make-up. I wear Crocs for god sakes. Growing up, my mom would shout at me to put on bindi or matching earrings. In fact all 4 of us hated dressing up. There was a brief period of time, I was into wearing the plain bangles upto my elbows. I think that was after Maine Pyar Kiya period. I remember I had a favourite salwaar suit and I would wear that same one to each and every function my mom dragged us to. Then I would demand that either she let me wear that or I wouldnt go. A lot of tears, alot of screaming shouting matches.

I dont intefere in what the girls choose to wear. If we are going to some pooja, I will make a suggestion and leave it at that. If they want to wear jeans and shirt, I dont care. If they want to wear the same comfortable suit which has been worn for the past 3 years, I dont care either. Surprisingly, both my daughters are very girly girls. They love wearing jewellery. They love getting dressed up. In fact, they actually lay the matching bindi, bangles, dupatta and shoes out before getting ready. They got that gene from my mom.

Last Sunday, we went out shopping. The girls and I. They picked out the frilliest silly things for me, a silky deep magenta blouse, or a white shirt with long ruffles along the side. Things which I would never ever pick out let alone buy. When we were in the shoes aisle, they would insist me on trying the tallest stilettos or the shiny flip-flops with the beaded flowers. Each time I refused to buy, Avasha would say, But mom its so pretty/cute/shiny/beautiful. I just shake my head in response.

Both girls have long hair. I dont want them to have long hair. Its a pain in the neck to maintain, to wash, to comb before 8 in the morning. I always urge them to cut short. Again both girls refuse and said no. In fact, I regularly use cutting their hair as threat. Imagine that.

Today they came to me and said they wanted me to do a french braid. How could I refuse? Consider the fact that I only know the basic braid..what could I do. Off we went to youtube.  And found a video. It looked easy enough but their fine silky hair kept slipping and it looked horrible. More searching and we found this video Fish Tail Braid. It looked easy enough. And it looked good. Ashwina was happy enough that she is going to school with this braid

but you KNOW how to tie the french braid! god forbid i have a daughter, poor girl will be stuck with uneven ponies! :p

    its lovely Asaan!

    cheers!

Me: I was shocked when you responded to this. I thought I had it saved as draft.. Opps.. Thats actually not th french braid. Thats something called a fishtail braid. The french one is the one that starts from the top of the head and comes down. I tried it and it look messy.

me too – no make-up plus not a girly-girl. of course have girls who aren’t like me. i think someone up there must be having a good laugh. hmph. oh and the hair thing – don’t even start me off.

Me: Me, you, and Kenny.. all have girly girls..funny.

Ooooh, thanks so much for this link! I never knew what this braid was called, never really looked it up, but i LOVE how it looks on my friends! :D

And uh… I think being girly and non-girly tend to alternate through the generations :P

Me: I think so too.u have long hair right, are you going to do it on your own. The lady video was saying it’s really hard to do it on yourself.

Loved the post and the braid. Thanks for increasing my knowledge on that braid. I am so sad now, i don’t have a daughter to try this on.

I appreciate your decision about letting your daughters wear what they want, rather than dragging them to wear something which they are not comfirtable with or do not want to wear :) , its always nice to have a happy child rather than a perfectly dressed unhappy child.

Me: yeah sometimes, they dont choose what is suitable for the occasion but I have learnt to let go of minor stuff.

I am so not girly… though I’m sure my blog kind of gives a different impression (it’s satire!!! I don’t actually have a 929.5 dollar wardrobe!)… I don’t wear makeup and I hate wearing frilly stuff. I had a friend who loved frilly stuff and sometimes we’d window shop together and she’d try to get me to try on frilly stuff… it was funny.

Girly girl … thats Cantaloupe and No make up, no matching jewellery simple clothing – thats me. She is barely 4+ and has her own sense of dressing … My mom who constantly cribbed about me, is mighty happy with her grand daughter :)

Me: Mine is too..very happy with her grand-daughters

  7. kbpm says:

French Braid eh? Dont let mine see it, will want it! & here I want to cut her hair and keep it as short as possible. Incidentally, the other big difference between us is that I am a big one for Mix’n'Match (you know, one pair of jeans several tees etc.). In stores here they even sell clothes under that head, my daughter will NOT wear t-shirts or tops bought separately from the skirts or pants. They have to be a ‘set’ A very troublesome thing.

Me: Interesting.. Mine matches everything to color and pattern. Sometimes she even matches her crocs and shoes to her outfits.

I am kinda girly- love dressing up, make up the whole nine yards. Started around college.

If daughters are opposite of moms then *sigh*. Hope not though! My grand mom and mom are girly too. Look at me! Counting chickens before they are hatched!

Me:rofl. Can you do the french braid. Then you could do it for my girls?

  9. rads says:

ooo, I was the official French-braider at school and college. Recently I have become the french-braid aunty too! :D

This fish tail looks pretty, must try soon.

  10. can u adopt me???? my mom just simply won’t rest till she doesn’t have a last word on me wearing something that matches with my outfit!!! that fish braid looks really nice. now that i wouldn’t mind flaunting! :D

lol @ abha fearing having a girl n tying uneven ponies for her!!!

  11. Subhashree says:

Cool. I’d like to try it, but first I need to find a head full of long hair :)

  12. wordjunkie says:

I’ve spent most of my life after 10 with hair shorter than most guys around, zero makeup and wearing my dad’s shirts to college (weird, I know, but those were the golden days of eveteasing in dilli, and I had to use the buses)

So it’s rather ironic that my daughter is as girly as they come, she intends to grow up and be Deepika Padukone.

    Nice header pic.

Me: What is it with us having girly girls. Will they change into not girly girls once they are in their teens?
