Weight Loss & Running Update

My 5k update is posted over at Fitness Fervor. The gist of it, I finished it. 46’23 mins  which was not what I wanted. I wanted it to be under 40 mins. I am working towards that goal.I am using a plan from Runner’s World, which has me working towards tempo runs and a long runs. La Vida Loca and I were chatting and she has me convinced that I can attempt to run/walk a *gulp* half marathon in Oct. (I cannot believe I am putting this out on the internet). So I am doing another 5k  in end June and a 10k in Aug and then maybe just maybe the half in Oct. I dont know.. it might a very, very ambitious plan considering I just started running, but who cares. Even if I am 2nd to last in the Half, it would still be 13.1 miles that I actually  finished.

I started tracking my running in mid April(15th tax day to precise) with the Nike + gadget. In April, I ran 29 miles. In May, 38.11 miles, 5077 calories burnt and 8 hours 53 mins of running. How freaking awesome are those numbers?

All the running has changed my body. I can see my stomach shrinking ever so slightly. I can see my arms getting more toned(although the bat’s wings are still there, sigh) and I just feel good abt myself. Again, if you are a numbers person, since giving birth to Samar, I have lost 65 lbs(he is 2.5 yrs old). I only lost maybe 10-15 lbs this year but my body has changed.

Your present situation is more sustainable in the long run- you’ll keep the weight off this way, instead of yo yoing. You know?

Me: I know I know.. SLow and steady but I want to be the hare.

  3. Sue Gir says:

  9. tearsndreams says:

    That was really inspiring.
Inspired me to stick to ‘exercise for 20 minutes everyday’ resolution I made at the beginning of the year. If you can do this, I can do Thaaaaaaat.

Me: Can we do it. YES WE CAN!

  10. M says:

Wow – distinct change in profile….I’ve found that the weight itself doesn’t change, it is the way the weight is distributed that changes. (After a certain amt of weight loss, that is)

BTW, do you have any knee issues at all? I ask, as I am contemplating re-starting running – after 20+ years! I used to be a long distance runner in school, but never ran, once I left school. I walk a fair amt, but want to bump up the pace and run – but have had some knee issues in the last year which the doctor attributed to height/age – you’re pretty much my height (but a LOT younger :-) ) , so could you share your stretching/warmup routine?

Me: I dont have knee issues but I do have a weak lower back due to the accident 2 years ago. When I went to the running store to buy stores, he put me in high support type shoes and they seem pretty comfortable. I also do a crazy yoga pose which I later found out seems to be the thing for “runners”. I will send you a detail email or a link on youtube if I can find what I am looking for.

    Thanks,

    M

Great! Seriously, the way your body looks has changed.

As you come closer to your ideal weight, you’re more likely to lose inches than pounds, right? So not to fret about not dropping kilos as quickly as before. You’re more toned and that’s what matters.

Me: Thanks Suki. I am going to make this a 6-8 week affair, taking pictures in the same tshirt.

  12. CA says:

    All the best !

    Me: Thanks

  13. Nitya says:

Applause. Of the loud variety. Can you hear it? :-)

    Me: Takes a Bow.

  14. M says:

What is the name of the yoga-asana? thanks! Been doing yoga for a few years now, so will try that first.

My knee problems are genetic though – mom/aunts everyone has them, I just want to make it through my middle-age without needing knee replacement(s)!

Me: One of the ones I love doing is the Piegon Pose http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFMr3NN2b5E. This used to hurt me a lot when I first started but I have gotten quite good now.
Another one is rocking. Stand straight, stand on the tippy toes, hands stretched over your head, then rock onto balls of your feet and hands go down beside your thighs. Like rocking sort of.
