Dressing Up

I was googling how to tie a scarf a particular way and one of my hits lead to this blog  Fab Finds under 50. I wastedspent 45 mins on that blog looking at her various outfits. .  If you are too lazy to click, that blog is about her daily outfits and how she uses accessories to jazz her up outfits, from scarves to belts to shoes to bags(Kiran you would like that site).

I have one huge bag which acts as my diaper bag.  I use that bag everywhere I go irregardless of what i am wearing.I have one comfy slip ons and my trusty crocs. I certainly dont have the skinny and wide belts she uses.  I have a few necklaces I just started wearing, funky beaded peices  which were hidden away till I lost my 3 chins. The best thing about her blog is that she isnt the perfect size 6 and yet she rocks all the outfits. Who says you have to thin to be fashionable? The other thing I like about her, is that she is wearing stuff that normal people can afford. JCP Old navy, Target and not designer stuff which I certainly cannot afford.(Thanks Shilpa) Who says fashion has to be expensive?

This lead to me thinking, why I dont dress up. Its  not that difficult to throw a nice pair of earrings, a long beady necklace and everything looks so glamorous. Sometimes, I think, heck I am only going to preschool drop off, who am I trying to impress there?  Then, there isnt even enough time to comb my hair let alone think what to accessorizes  with.  Other times, I feel that I am doing it all wrong, wearing my curis(bangles) with a shirt and jeans or throwing on my tie dye dupatta with a black dress. But that is style right? Your individual statement. How you co-ordinate your existing jewellery/clothes/shoes to create a whole new outfit!

Maybe I will do  what she does. Take pictures of my outfit and post it on my blog. Although I doubt I could do it every day, day in day out. Maybe a week to start off with.(Nk thinks I am narcissistic what with posting my weightloss pictures. This will throw him over the edge,) What do you guys do? Do you have dress up all the time? Do you have colorful scarves/jewellery/shoes/bags?

At one time I was just like you and never did do anything different. It was always am just going to the grocery store or the kid’s school and I hated changing earrings etc. I have slowly moved to the other side and enjoy the few moments I take each morning to accessorize. Still not completely into the scarf, handbag change everyday. Once you start you realize it’s fun within the time constraints we all deal with :) Looking forward to your pictures in this space as you experiment!

Me: I started experimenting as well. I have quite a few shawls, scarves and loved wearing them in winter. In summer, I dont use much of those but that blog has wonderful ideas and I am so going to copy them. Actually I have a wide belt that came with a knit skirt and I used it .

Oh, that website looks fun. I’ve always wondered how come I never “dress up” — it’s amazing how chic jeans and a t-shirt can look if I just take the time to wear a necklace and earrings. I think I’m going to give it a try.

Me:Yes.. We should take time out to put on a earrings and stuff. And our girls will be proud of the way we look as well right?

That is a fab blog !!!! Seriously, she looks so good in all the outfits even though she isnt “thin”. My accessories are limited to nice matching earrings and scarves in the winter. I had about 250 pairs of them when I was in India but here, I hardly have the will to dress up properly. I sometimes go to school in my bathroom slippers :( :(

Me: faints and dies. Bathroom slippers..tsk tsk.

Huh – more power to you! :-) I am definitely of the comfort school of fashion, and work in software where anything but nudity goes, but realised that wearing clothes that fit and are of good quality carries you quite far…I don’t wear scarves unless it is winter, but long earrings are a weakness, so I change them all the time. I always wear a watch and have started claiming my cell phone is an accessory, since it is always on my hip! :-D

    M

Me:Oh me too. Comfort is first. Although comfort and fashion do not always go hand in hand right? You know, I stopped wearing watches, since I always have my cellphone.

    Haha I HAVE to comment!

First – “Nk thinks I am narcissistic what with posting my weightloss pictures. This will throw him over the edge” hehe they always think we are narcissistic…and what about when they preen in front of the bathroom mirror seeing if they look good?

Me: :) I agree.. I dont know what he does in the bathroom for so long.

Coming to my dress-up style, I mostly wear solids, blacks, browns, light colors, and have just two really bright outfits. My accessories almost always include dangly earrings and sometimes a long beaded necklace. I tried experimenting with scarves but I thought it aged me(50 year olds wear scarves in my office, although I personally love wearing them). Like I told you before, I have never experimented with belts. I should try them, and post some pictures! Oh and bags, I have a HUGE brown one that I take everywhere. The only avenue where I really experiement is shoes. I wear red, yellow, blue everything!

Me: I realized that I owned too many blacks and browns. Now if I pick something in black, I put it down and try to find it another color. I just bought a really pretty deep magenta color blouse. Shoes, I dont have shoes, I need to buys shoes an especially femine one instead of the clunky ones I always wear.

Well, my company is so geeky that people are completely apathetic towards dressing. It’s OK if you do. It’s OK if you don’t and I usually take the easy way out by not dressing up. But when I go to let’s say New York on work I do take care to look reasonably “in” (It’s another matter than no outsider is ever “in” in NYC :P ). Heck, when I’m meeting a bunch of friends who I know like to dress up, then I do it too. But when I’m meeting another bunch who are rather laid back and into comfy clothes, then I don’t. I guess a lot of it depends on the surroundings one is in, no? Thanks for pointing to the blog. Some good tips there.

Me: right it does depend on surroundings. But that gives me an easy way out, because I am not going to work I dont need to dress up. Because I am just dropping off the kids at school I dont need to dress up. And so on and so forth. I just took some pictures with stuff I had at home. Will post in abit

  7. Know what? i have just started accessorising myself. I adored those long beaded necklaces, but teh SG was so tine when they came in, and with me carrying him all the time, I did not want to hurt him, so I never got around to wearing them till now. Earlier(pre-pregnancy) i used to stock up on junk jewellery like crazy, but never wore them. It is just in the last coupel of months, with the weight loss and everything, that I am all high on dressing up, and giving it a shot. Honestly, its so much fun. But that is only for my weekend outings, cannot incorporate it into daily life…. just too much work. ;)

Basically i get you exactly! And girl you go dress up!

Me: I have been looking for a long skinny beaded necklaces and yet to find one. Is it because its last years fashion hmmm muct catch up.

Such a fab idea! We should always look our best no matter where we are :)

This is another site that started up quite recently with style ideas by an indian girl. While she is a skinny little thing that make one think that anything looks good on her but it has some nice ideas too :)

    http://styleperdiem.wordpress.com/

Me:Shilpa just told me abt this one. I am awed by their dedication to posting in such detail.

  9. silvara says:

And here’s another one based on celebrity styles that I love as well :D

    http://www.frugal-fashionistas.com/

    Me: nice!

  10. La Vida Loca says:

what kind of a question is that? Of course I do!

  11. spamwarrior says:

I just wear tshirts and jeans because it’s more practical. But sometimes I’ll french braid my hair and wear earrings and a bracelet.

  12. Chumi says:

i’ve got all that colorful stuff that u mentioned alrite.. the scarves, accessories, jewelery, clothes, shoes, bags… etc etc… but i hardly wear them! i’ve got 4 boxes full of earrings, n wat do i wear everyday?? d same old tiny ring earring that i’ve had on since 2 years ago. i’ve got a suitcase full of scarves, n wat do i wear everyday, d same old white n grey which is my favorite… sigh…

but its really nice to dress up once in a while.. thats when it makes all d difference rather than dressing up all the time

Me: You know thats true as well. if you are always dressed up , the one day you arent, people will ask you what happened. Likewise with makeup, if you are always in makeup, the one day you arent, you will look so differrent. But change your earrings.

  13. I suppose when you say Skinny Little Thing, you’re referring to Inopinate and not the rest of us on Style Per Diem. We just try to make do with our paunch and double chins. We’d like to see what you’re wearing and since you’re already a wordpress user, I’ll quickly add you as co-author. A fresh contributor would be inspiring.
It really doesn’t require that much dedication!

Me: Hey. Let me email you.

  14. Sands says:

I did check it out and she has some pretty ideas we could use unlike a few others out there that are nice to look but hardly can be incorporated into our lifestyle :) I have also noticed that when I dress up my daughter makes the effort as well. If not she’s mostly not interested :)

Me: or ideas that are way beyond one’s budget. Hello Birkin bag!

  15. AverageJane says:

You are so right! I’m super impressed with people who put together nicely all / most of the time.

  16. But I find plenty of them here…. but now that you say it, most are on sale, probably because they are the old trend. But I do see so many women adorning them, and I think long necklaces do give us a thinner appearance isn’t it? Not sure if they are out of style yet… I love them for sure.:)

  17. Prashanti says:

hey , wanted to tell you .. studied all night yesterday and went to walmart at 6 in the morning in pajamas and bathroom slippers :)

Ok dont die plz plz :)
