Oink Oink And Other News

Ashwina stayed up till 12.30 on Diwali night. She woke up at 10 a/m on Sunday morning and went sailing at 3 in the afternoon with her girl scouts troop. She come home exhausted, showered, ate and went to bed early. Monday morning, she woke up coughing and with a slight warm forehead. I kept her home, gave her Motrin and babied her. Today, she was worse. Her fever last night was high, she was shivering and she slept till 12 p/m. I came home from Samar’s school, and Nk left for work.

I made an appt with my ped, hoping it was just a virus and not the oink oink virus. But no the test came positive. It was H1n1. The doc told me not to worry. She is fine. Just rest, fluids and take the Tamiflu medication. What is scary if Samar gets it. He has bad asthma and almost always needs hospitalization if its gets to his lungs. We have had a few frightening episodes already. Please think good thoughts for us. I dont want the rest of the kids to catch it. I dont want to catch it because who will take care of the kids if I am sick. I cannot be sick. I have no family here to call and watch and take over my duties while I recover. So I cannot be sick.

I still went for my Tuesday evening class. It was the still life. We shot artichokes, a white pumpkin against a black  background, chestnuts, persimmons and a peacock feather. The instructors gave us certain assignments. Underexposed-Over exposed, High ISO, Low ISO..all very fun stuff.

Impressive huh? It was  neat, how lights and a backdrop made everything so pretty and nice. I need to try this at home.It will be fun looking at things in different way.

Oh man. She caught swine flu :( Hope Ashwina gets wells soon. The most tiring part is the worry that other kids will catch it. Isn’t the whole family supposed to take some pill if one is down. Recently one of my relative’s kid caught it (and they have 4 kids too) and they were all taking some preventive medicine. Try to find out if there is one. I really hope nobody gets the infection. Take care.

Me: Samar is starting the Tamiflu. We arent. I dont know whether we should.

  2. Roisin says:

  6. starry-eyed says:

Sending you positive thoughts. I felt similarly scared during the H1N1 panic here few mths back…Divya has asthma, and like you I can’t afford to be sick…there’s no family to take over.

Hugs…and you’ll all be okay. We get strength from somewhere to get thru hard times.

    Hope Ashwina recovers soon.

  14. Angie says:

You can ask the doctor to give all of your children, as well as you and NK Tamiflu, but esepcially S! It’s also a preventative. I don’t know why he didn’t just offer it to you, but definitely be proactive and call him and your doctor and tell them you have one already with H1N1 and need to try and prevent it in the rest of the family, especially the children.

    http://www.tamiflu.com/treat.aspx

You can start reading there for more info on it, but call this morning!

Me:I already did call in a prescribtion for Samar. So you think all of us should take it? She didnt think we were high risk. F!Ck I dont even have a doc here! Argh!

  26. Sands says:

sending a prayer your way girl. I am sure she will be fine soon. Hang in there. Keep Samar away from her. I know ‘coz I have a kid with asthma at home :(

  27. Prashanti says:

Hey Sunita, sorry to hear about ashwina. How long did the doc say she will take to recover?? Does she have a separate room so that the other three can be in different rooms for a while at least even though its gonna be tough ??? Take care and dont worry, she will be alright soon..

Me:She can go back to school on Tuesday.

I loved he peacock feather picture a lot

  28. M says:

Oh dear – poor kiddie…but both my kids and I had the H1N1 flu last week – and two of us are asthmatics as well – I agree the flu wasn’t too bad – but it left me feeling way more wiped out than other illnesses. I’m still dragging and needing a nap in the middle of the day! The kids of course, went through a couple of days of fever and then I had to practically tie them down to keep them from running around. The asthmatics among us did start wheezing – we were given extra prednisone, and extra doses of inhaled steroids to use as neded (Doc left it to my judgement, to see if son was in distress or not)

Me: She has no fever since last night. I am going to call in Tamiflu for Samar even though he has no symptons YET.

Don’t wait at all, if any of the other kids start a fever – get them tested immediately – and the docs will probably put the whole family on Tamiflu – mine did, even though husband wasn’t sick.

Me: My doc said I dont even need to come in to be tested if the other kids get a fever. She would call in Tamiflu for them. I dont know whether I want to start the entire gang on it though. Sigh decisions.

Isolation might help – can you keep her in a separate room from the other kids and have them not go anywhere near her? Also obsessive hand washing (soap and water) and no sharing ANYTHING (no toys, games, books etc).

    Good Luck!

    M

Me: I am telling the kids not to share anything. Let’s see how it goes.

  29. Lux says:

Hmm…Tat’s sad…Huggs to you and ashwina….Hang on tight and remember ‘this too shall pass.
Don’t worry yaar, she’ll soon be alright and i pray tat it doesn’t spread to the other kids.

Btw, Awesome snaps….Which camera do you use?

    Me: Nikon D80

  30. Bini says:

S..I love your +ve attitude towards everything in life.I guess you’ll have to keep the other one’s away from here till she fully recovers..Did the doc ask all of you to go on medication too? Coz that’s what one guy at work had to do when his daughter got the flu.My prayers are with her and all of you.Make sure you keep those hand sanitizers handy:)..Also its a good idea to tell her girl scouts troop, so the parents are aware..

Me: I emailed them and went to the principals’ office this morning. What ese can I do other than have a positive attitude.

  31. kris says:

Don’t know what to say. Somebody at work passed out and I think he has a embolism. And then I come to my desk to read this.
As the doc said, nothing to worry as she is a big kid, but try to keep the l’ill ones far away.
And please keep checking on Ashwina regularly. If you think something is not right, run to the hospital.
H1N1 while is not frightening can be severe in some cases. Which case is that is unpredictable.
All the best and I pray that she gets well soon.

Me: She seems happy and fine this morning. No fever and she is reading in her room right now. I am watching her like a hawk.

  32. anon says:

send the rest of kids to a friends place if possible especially the last one..( one of the options )

    Me: Nah, not an option.

  33. AverageJane says:

Oh, sending you guys lots of good thoughts and wishes. Hope she gets better quickly. The pics are very nice!

Me: Thanks AJ> I hope so too.

  37. Reema says:

    nice snaps!

    Me: Thanks Reema

  38. couchpapaya says:

sending prayers and good wishes your way!! i do hope ashwina recovers soon … ur probably doing it already but the thing that generally works for us is eating/drinking lots of vitamin c and echinacea to build up immunity.
the photos are beautiful! do u use different lenses too?

Me: I bought 3 lenses off a friend for cheap. The one I used in yesterday’s class was the tamron 28-80mmf5.6. I open it to 80 most of the time. My fav however is the $100 prime lens 50mmf1.8. Its one I used in most portraits. I also rented the 18-200mm(the beach wala shots) which firstly is way too heavy and secondly I keep forgeting it was zoom and kept walking up to my subject. I am going to rent a macro lense next time for fun.

  39. M says:

Why are you hesitant to start the others on Tamiflu? AFAIK, the only side effect is nausea – and it is only a 5 day course. In our case, the kids came down with it simultaneously (they came home from school with fever), and that evening my doc called in my prescription – too late, as I started running a fever by then anyway! I went in for a flu test just to be sure, and it was positive for H1N1, so husband started on the Tamiflu. I’d say start them others especially as you’re worried about Samar.

    M

Me: I hate giving the kids medication. It would be a ten day course for Samar. The liquid suspension is sold out or not available in most pharmacies. Ashwina is taking the capsules. I dont know whether the other 2 can swallow pills. And as for me, I hate taking pills. I am still waiting for my ped to call me back. See her fever started on Monday and so far knock on freaking wood no one else seems to be coming down with anything.I am thinking and rethinking my decisions.

  40. Era says:

Blessings, good health and positive energy to you and the family.

    Those persimons look lucious!

  41. suma says:

that’s tough!!! take care…all of you

  42. Poppy says:

Oh boy! Take care all of you !

  43. M says:

Tamiflu is a capsule, not a pill – so you can actually open the capsules up and pour the meds into the kids mouth, if you don’t have the liquid form for Samar.

And I don’t mean to sound preachy, but given the possibility that Samar (at least) will need meds all his life for something or the other, can you start teaching them to take pills? I started my son at 3 – and this kid has the worst gag reflex ever – he still throws up at throat swabs – they learn very quickly (growing up in India, we didn’t have the choice then – parents would crush some larger pills and give it to us with honey, but you were expected to get used to pills soon enough) – and it really is easier – some of the steroids used for asthma/allergies taste absolutely disgusting and a pill goes down with less of an aftertaste than liquid.
