Imagine this convo with a desi mom at Kinder dismissal time.
DesiMom: Array tum to aaj bahut achi lag rahe ho. Kaha gaaye thi.(You look very nice, where did you go)
Sraikh: Kahi nahi, Samar’s preschool and then back
DM: toh boots kyu pahane? (why you wearing boots)
Sraikh: Aise hi felt like it
DM:Abhi toh tumare pati bhi nahi hai na, toh kiske liye deekah raheyi ho(Well, your dh isnt even here, then who do you want to show it to)
Sraikh: Hmm. tumare toh pati hai nah toh tumne itna ghatiye khapray kyu pahane hai.(Your dh is here, then why are you wearing such horrible clothes)
After I said that, I thought to myself why did I do that. Sometimes, it okay to be quiet. But it was a crazy day at Samar’s preschool dealing with some stuff and I was in no mood for shit from anyone.. Oh well, tomorrow I will be nice to her. She just laughed and said I dont have time to dress like you do every day. She comments on my outfits every single time, this necklace is weird or that scarf is not appropriate for my age. I normally just smile but not today.
Jacket:Marshalls
Tanktop:Target
Vest:Thrifted
Skirt: Church Rummage Sale
Boots:Thrifted
Necklace/Bangles:Thrifted
Manon took this picture for me. I kept looking at the kids or her mom and made her retake at least 4 times

LMAO!
I love people like her who ask for it.. then I walk all day with a smirk and feel all high and mighty!! Tell her your whip is stashed in the minivan!!
Me: rofl.. You”ll like this one from my archives http://asaaan.wordpress.com/2008/10/23/when-to-bite-your-tongue/
Aaah, very nice retort. Serves her right !! And as always, the outfit is superb.
Me: Thanks Prashanti.
maybe she is just a Saggi or Virgo!
Saggi speaks without thinking not meaning bad and Virgo just criticizes everything.
Me: I am a Scorpio, what does that say about me.
Hahaha… too funny. I wish I had the guts to say stuff like that.
What most ppl don’t get is that women dress for themselves (or maybe a leetle to impress other women!), and not to attract the men. Well, that’s my opinion…obviously DM doesn’t agree:) Like your boots!
Me: I think the fact I stay home and have 4 kids and no where fancy to go, makes people question why am I wearing a pretty outfit every single day.
Yay for you for wearing what you feel like, and for giving her that smart answer! I wore a lovely long dressy skirt today to a tiny lil’ restaurant…everyone stared down their noses…but I loved the feeling…been missing wearing that skirt!
Me: What? Why would people stare?
I love this outfit.
And I think it’s pretty bold of her to think she has some say in what you wear. As if!
Me: Angie, BIO news. Jessica had a baby girl. Do you read her blog? oh I assume you are friends with her on FB but in case you didnt know
Very Apt and not Bitchy:)..When will (Indian??) women learn that dressing up is not for others but for themselves. I think overall it just boosts your morale and self esteem.Besides it doesnt hurt to be presentable:). I have a similar skirt and just love it:). Maybe a brighter color Tank next time?..You go girl!!!.Love the header..! and just love the way Neil poses for your pics:)
Me: I dont know. See one of my replies below/above about why people think its weird to dress up (all of sudden) when I am just a sahm
Love love the boots….my eyes are still on them
Me: It is a really fantastic pair. And comfy as well. I dont know, maybe she thinks I am trying to hook the daddies who come for pick up.
I am so proud of you.
More people like you and the desi junta will stop crossing the line.
In fact can please go and ask her if she is the type who supports that widows should only wear white sarees and get their head shaved if they don’t want to remarry.
Me: Oye half the kinder moms already hate me after witch hunt. There are like 1-2 moms left who dare to make eye contact with me now. If I say this, they too will wouldnt even dare stand next to me.
I knew it! I stopped reading at “Abhi toh tumare pati bhi nahi hai na, toh kiske liye deekah raheyi ho” and told myself, I know what S is going to say to this woman, and bang!
I love the answer…….I wish people would say things to me so I can reply like that. Man that bay area has some bitchy desis.
I love your attire. The boots baby!
Me: Some, not all…Very different group of desi women. There is one bunch who grew up in India but settled here say for the past 10-15 years who claim, they hate Bollywood and dont know Shah Rukh Khan from Salman Khan and then there is this other group.
She’s just pissed because you look so hot.
She totally deserved it! None of her (or anyones) business what you wear and for that matter, who you wear it for
!!!! Good for you to give it back to her!!!
Me: waves hello
arey usko tension lag raha hai…ki kahin uskapati tumpe fida na hojaye…..
hehehehe
Me: Where have you been? I asked for your (male)input aabout 20 posts back. ANd fida… I like the sound of that word.
Would have preferred a fitter jacket, but otherwise the outfit looks good!
Me: Hmmm fitted jacket..
Your brain really works fast !!
You know, I always feel hurt when someone is mean to me and think of how I could handle the situation or give back …only the moment is gone.
Me: Thats coz you are a nice compassionate person. I am very mean in some regards.
You are looking lovely! I love this look!
As for that mom, I think you did right in giving it back
Whoever is she to decide when or how you should dress up! Goodness! By that logic, if our husbands aren’t here, we should all go around looking like rubbish? And what about dressing for ourselves? Guess, she is just jealous
Me: I think the boots did it. They were a bit too much and over the top for preschool pick up wear.
DesiMom deserved every bit of what she got. Infact you should have hiked up the bitchiness quotient!
I really admire you for saying things you want to say when you want to say it. I usually come back home shell-shocked and it usually takes 2 days to think up the reply – which we all know is a complete waste.
Me: See my reply to CA. The same applies to you as well.
LOL. I think she deserved that one. And in the right tone, it just might win you a friend!
Me: I was late today and didnt see her. Tomorrow wil update ki whether she is ignoring me or back to being normal
Yaar, that did sound a little harsh when I read first, but given the background about how subtly she annoys ou everyday with stupid comments…I think you didn’t do wrong.
Me: She does annoy, like on the day I wore my scarf as a headband(photo on FB), she said, aaj toh schoolgirl jaise lag rahe ho or when I wore a really funky necklace, she said ajeeb necklace pahenti ho tum. Now she will think twice before making silly remarks, right?
The fact that she smiled back to hide the slap on her face just proves that she knew she deserved it
Me:
Or she was laughing at my Hindi.
You are awesome in your replies S. I am going to use this one next time. I hate when people question me “kiske liye dressing up” Cant we dress up for ourselves? Should it always be for a man.
I bet she will never ever ask the same question to anybody.
Me: I bolded your question. Why do we need an occasion to dress up or for someone to dress up for. If I want to wear my boots, do I need to go to a fancy restaurant to do it. If I want to wear while going grocery shopping, so be it.
LOL hats off to u for being so quick thinking! she was asking for it …. those boots are amazing!!
well you could have really given it to her and said
Nahee tumhara pati tau hai na so I will keep on dressing up for him
or
Nahee aaj I dressed up for you, Kiyoo Aati Tu Kiya Khandala?
Me: Must ask NK what does Tau mean? Tau means older chahcha right? but in slang??
I really wish I had the guts to say stuff like you, these people deserve it. I hate the questioning that goes on in desi circles too, no question is considered improper. I’m steeling myself for an up coming India trip where everybody will ask me for “good news” when I’ve been married for less than a year. Do you have any suggestions for appropriate responses
I’m considering pretending that I don’t know what they mean
Me: Hmm..good news.. job abhi hi hai wohi good news kafi hai.
i like the bitchy sraikh.. lol! and ur outfit today is my favourite of all ur daily outfit post.. u look so cool!
LOL. Great retort. Really some stupid people don’t realize that they are crossing the line. Its okey to give it back to them. Loved it!
Hi, Have bumped onto your blog since a week now (don’t ask me from where coz I don’t remember)…and I am hooked !!! Love the way you take time to dress and love your attitude even more !!
Keep it up
Neelum from KL, Malaysia
Me: Waves hello. Where in malaysia? Sigh just thinking of Malaysia/Singapore reminds me of the food.
considering she does this kinda crap she so totally deserved it! good for ya!!
and i love the look, very classy!
and in Aneela’s comment when she wrote Tau she meant Toh… or maybe you got that!
yeah Tau is older chacha! add the ji nad ist all respect! tauji! :p
cheers!
Me: You so smart, Abha.thats what she meant!
LOL!nice one…she must be rather thick-skinned or your Hindi’s really bad!I’m also one of those who think up “snappy answers to stupid questions”about 2 hours later…no use really…
Those boots are kickass ones..no wonder you felt like kicking butt;)..I also go with the opinion that you neeed a nice fitted jacket to show off all those curves.
What jealous bitch that woman is.
Good on u for saying what u said.
dressing up is different to dressing well. You are not dressed up to go to the Opera. What is she saying? You are dressed in casual clothes but dressed well.
Ahh. people make me so grrrrr. I love that you said to her. good on u.
she was asking for it.
It’s amazing how some people have a way of continually pushing our buttons.
Haha …Tit for tat….Good going shraik.
To be frank, I didn’t like today’s snap…You look drained out + photo itself look dull/dark + Hair bhi – not upto the mark.Well, thre’s always tomorrow.
Hello Dear, I did read your blog … just the 9 days !!!
I wish I could fly like Hanuman and be with you and kids. I convey my heart felt thanks to your fans who are moral and emotional support to you in such difficult times. Sraikh fans Your prayers and well wishes did work. Its really a miracle my father is recovering and responding well!!
Dear please correct my grammer . I beg you to publish this
LOVE CHELKS NK Your Akela Iklota Pati
Me: A comment from you! after All these years. This made my day. CHELKS back.
That was really low of DesiMom. The implications of “abhi husband bhi nahin hai” made me cringe. Small minds are small minds every where I guess.
Now I know why Yo says she and you are a lot alike
Good one girl!
WoW! Thats so sweet of NK! Ten Points To Husband
Me: And 90 to wives
I’m so glad your FIL is better. NK’s really missing you!
This is Avanti. Had to comment. I was surrounded with such nasty people in real life back in India.
Loved your response!
Woohoo, not only do you look super hot, you are also giving it back to nosy bitches !? I love I love!
Me:rofl
APT reply….serves her right….sometimes you need to tell people their limits….
No you are not .. the lady asked for it in this situation … you are plain smart !
Oh CA – I’m also like that now – have lost my ‘catty’ touch post babies I think. Need to sharpen the claws soon
Me: I got mine back after the 4th pregnancy. I also give people 3 chances. 3 times to say stupid remarks, ranging from what I am wearing to why I have 4 kids or why I dont pray or why the kids dont speak Hindi. The 4th time, I normally am rude and very very bitchy.
sorry S, kiddo was sick for a few days and was engaged in all sorts of things…(nothing dirty, only work, hehehe) after our trip to India…
Me: Everything and everyone fine and hale and healthy now?
so what post are you referring to?
btw, I feel weird posting things/opinions here….hamhe narilok se takkar lene ka koi iccha nahin….your blog is full of cat women as it is……
Me: I forgot which post it was, but I do know it was something I wanted your and Pera’s opinion on as you are the only 2 male readers(as far as I know) and it was something that Kenny had said in a comment…maybe somethng on marriage. if I ever find it again, I will link it up
Cat women?? Who? They are all very nice women. Did you see I have scared away all my trolls. I havent had one nasty comment in a long time..
*sakshi with her claws says MEOW to kris* cat women? me thinks its hilarious
You are a RIOT!!!
)
I may be generalising, but they could be from small towns in India and not the cities. We’ve had NRI visitors who are SHOCKED to know that Bombay has Wi-Fi and that you can buy the latest computer or use a swipe card at work.
Me: You know most people who left India have that image stuck in their heads. They think India is stuck in 1980s or 90s..Things have changed so much, its shocking. They forget that India has moved far far ahead. I keep getting shocked at teens who have Rs15,000 Nokia phones or some branded stuff.
no i meant tau as in ” so”
Me: toh..:)
