Monday MoneySavers (Maybe)

I have been donating tons of the kids clothes/ books/toys to the thrift store. I feel so accomplished. Of course, with each trip, I go in and do a sweep of the thrift store. I have to say I have been very good and havent bought a single thing, no jewelry/outfit  or tchotchkes.

If you can recall from last week’s post, Thursday, a certain color tag would go on the 50% sale up until Monday when that tag would be 99 cents. Thats how I got the mirror for 99cents. Upstairs by the hidden staircase.

I found this vanity table on Thursday

Vanity table

It was  $79.99 and yellow tag which means 50%. But then I run down to ask the guy if I come back on Monday,do I buy it for 99cents. He said YES!

Then I saw this

Dining Table

This dining table had a yellow tag as well and it was $90. I have been hunting for round table for a while now but then I thought I will come back on Monday because I am cheap.

Side note–I met Sujatha and we went garage saling Sat morning. Garage sales were a bust but then I showed her my fav thrift stores and she agreed they were really good. She bought a brand new with tags formal jacket. She saw the dining table and vanity as well with their yellow tags.

Today, I told Nk to stay home and I will go check out whether the table/vanity is there. I will pay them and ask them to hold it for me and we’ll figure out a way to transport it later. So I reach there at 8.56a/m and there are 20 people in line. I walk up the stairs and see both pieces of furniture there. My heart skips a beat. And I look closer. They had switched the tags. Its now purple tag. I was like hmmm..

I went downstairs and ask a sales guy. He listens to my story and said sometimes people switch tags around and it wasnt yellow tag. I then whip out my cell phone and showed him the picture with the yellow tag. He said he cannot change it and to come back after 12p/m when the manager on duty comes. I then decide to leave. I am now going to say its wasnt fated to come home with me and leave it at that. But if you were me, what would you do?

Yes I did see those yellow tags on the table ! I will be your witness . And I loved all the things especially the furniture in the second store we went too, I was going on and on about it to one of my friend who just bought the house and was trying to convince her to buy stuff there, but you know how they are !
Thanks for showing me these places Sraikh.

Me: You know what I feel, if they dont want to listen, then its better because more for us!

  2. KB says:

you are such a good blogger , honest and open .To tell the truth I would be scared to write each thing in open..but then its just me ! but what ever ..your weight loss prgms or daily mundane things ..you can write so easily ! hats off .

Me: I wonder whether is that a good thing or bad? To be so very open when I know people from my “real life” read me

Its part of what makes us love you Sunita, in “real life” and your blog. I wish more people were as honest and open as you are, its why I count you as a cherished friend!

  3. Few days back I was shopping and bought some PJs for Cantaloupe looking at the sale price. At the counter the lady told me they were not on sale. BP was ready to pay the original price and I just wanted to return them. (they were already billed) I asked BP to go and return it while I’d go and double check the price on the counter. And I was right … they were indeed marked for sale. I called out the store lady and pointed out to her that while they show on sale they weren’t. The lady just said I’m sorry and removed the Sale tag. When I came back to BP he told me that the lady at receiving counter apologised for their goof up and offered the sale price since it was “Their” mistake.
I think thats the way it should be …

Me: A normal retail store, yes I would be fighting them. But this is a thrift store where their dollar goes back back to helping other people..so I should just suck up and pay $40 which is also a very good deal for a wooden table. I however am letting it go this time..and will find out what color is on sale this week :)

I wanted to ask you on chat if you went and bought the vanity today but forgot!! I am soo sad :( I think you should have argued with the manager but considering it is a thrift store and it was soo cheap at 99 cents, maybe the argument wouldn’t look so good. but soo sneaky of them to switch tags like that :(

Me: I know but I found something else which made my day for FREE. But you will find out next week!

  5. Dee says:

I guess a lot of people asked for the table and vanity.. The store must have realized that they could make a whole lot more money out of it and they must have switched the tags..

Since u have a pic why not try again.. You really have nothing to lose, only a table to gain :D

Me: It was raining last night and I didnt want to drive in the rain. I will however make a comment to the manager next time I am there.

  6. Perakath says:

I’m very impressed that you took pictures with the original tags on!

Me: With my handy dandy cell phone camera. Those 2 pictures from the G1 as well. I took them to write this post!

  7. Clueless says:

I think I would be a little uneasy if

    1. It is a thrift store and the price with the purple tag is a steal
    2. The thrift store is connected to a charity / cause

    Retail stores?? Have no mercy!

    Me: We both think alike!

  8. Clueless says:

Just realized you wrote the exact same thing in one of the comments!

  9. chooch says:

as i,ve said before,i think you and yours are v.cute:)..and i agree with you about not fighting with them ,cos they are “charity”and i,m gonna vote on the last one because you,ve put it there and i think it,s funny!luv ya!

Me: :) Did you read NK’s translation of the poem down below?

  10. aniruddha says:

that is so bad..you should surely go back and talk to the manager..but will he listen? he’s part of the same store isnt it? how do i track comment on this blog?

Me: See I added the widget for you!

  11. roisin says:

sunita that table is a steal at half off, if its still there you should get it, its lovely!

Me: I think, I would wait till we move and then go get it, if its there.

  12. Guddi says:

Go and dimaag khao them everyday!! They’ll get tired and give it to you. They may even home deliver it. :)

Me: hahaha. I now need to concentrate on moving. No more thrifting till we moved.

  13. lux says:

Those guys have switched the tags for sure.Ofcourse i would have felt bad , if i were you. Look at this way, you are destined to get something better than this. So wait till it comes your way. Don’t lose spirits and
keep checking till you find the right set.

Did you check the nearby regular furniture store? With the recessiona and stuff, some stores gives good deals(not the regualr jack up the price and then announce 50 / 75 % types). Recenlty i saw a beautiful wooden 6/8 seater for 150-200 bucks(marked down), which i felt a steal for the price you pay.

Me: Ohhh I would have to hunt for some furniture stores then.

  14. nam says:

I have been reading your blog for some time now love the way you write.
Are you sure the things u buy especially furniture are bugs free. I have a friend who bought things from thrift store got bugs in her house although she looked carefully and disinfected the things. I used to meet her often so the bugs came to my house as well. I got my house fumigated today and its such a pain and waste of money :(
I just wanted you to be alert about it as u have kids at home too.

Me: Hmm no bugs so far. What did she buy? what kind of bugs?

    • nam says:

she bought a wooden dresser and couch a few weeks back and got bed bugs in everything in the house as they spread very quickly. Even if u buy clothes from thrift store keep them separate until u wash them put the things that are not washable in the dryer for atleast 20 mins. My house is in a complete mess I have to wash all my clothes and utensils as the pesticide smell was so strong that the whole floor was stinking when I came home this evening.

  15. That shiny dark round table is wrth it..even in a 50% tag yaar. They did switch tags when they relaized it might be profitable after all. But, you go get it ..looks real sweet deal anyways! :D

( I wish I had that kind of space to get cool shiny furnitures in..but nope, decided to keep some open space for the baby to move around )

Me: We never had a coffe table! NEVER. The baby would always get hurt so it didnt make sense to get one. We finally have one this year and will have the space for it.

  16. Lakshmi says:

I would never argue for price, that is just me. It makes me uncomfortable. Explains why I never find deals ;)

  17. I don’t think the vanity table is worth the trouble ;)
