How to place my living room furniture.

My Photoshop Skills

I, for the life of me, cannot figure out how to place my living room furniture. We have a sofa, coffee table and an arm chair. The window directly across from the entrance, I placed the curio cabinet and my corner indoor plant stand.  The living room is long and rectangular. The 4 closets prevent me from placing any of the furniture against the corners. Then the entry to the long hallway, again breaks up the living room into 2 halves.

I have a 36 inch CRT TV(we might invest in a flat screen Tv next year but for now, this works for us). A small entertainment center and thats it. No other seating stuff.Again I am going to keep my eye out and maybe buy some more arm chairs or slipper chairs to create another space in one half of the room but thats for later. Any one has any ideas?

ooh sounds trick, I would have said put the sofa at the window directly across the entrance but you put the curio cabinet there. If the room is long enough, you can put a area rug in the middle and make a seating area there and not block any of the windows but otherwise, the window across the entrance is the best choice.

Your sofas and any other seating things don’t need to be against walls. They can “float” in the middle of the room. We only have one sofa against a wall (underneath a window). Everything else is in the middle of the room, creating a seating area.

Are the sofa and chair tall enough that they’d block the window? If not the sofa could be against the long wall under one of the windows and the armchair under the other wall. I like a armchair near a window, creates a perfect place for reading.
The TV could be against the wall with the closet entrance to hall. If the room is big enough I like the floating furniture idea too.
I sometimes look at different furniture store websites for inspiration on arranging furniture. Ikea is nice they have some complicated setups.

Me: One of my friends suggested that I wait till everything is moved in and then play around with the placement. I think thats what I am going to go with. I might have to sacrifice a closet space and place things in that I never use

I agree with Angie – don’t need them right against the wall – the windows look huge so I an see a nice daybed/window seat or two armchairs for that area in the future (is that where the view is from? it’s be an awesome chai-sipping station :P )

I’d have the entertainement unit/TV along the wall where there is nothing (the east side) and then the sofa and armchair in a sort of diagonal placement facing the tv. The coffee table would go in the middle. I’d also, when you can, get a rug for the hardwood floor to go in the middle (i.e. as in the coffee table would sit on the rug) creating a nice cozy area.

Alternatively – if the sofa is big enough – have that parallel to the tv and have the armchair sitting diagonal to the window side (still facing the tv). That opens up the space a bit more towards the entrace to the kitchen AND I was thinking – to break up the room a bit- you could get a 2 x 4 horizontal cube bookcase (from Ikea – Expedit range) and put that behind the sofa. This will create an entrance way – put like photographs and a vase with flowers, a nice bowl for keys or something and the cube openings you can put anything – from other photographs to books to statues (we have a Ganesh at the entrance to our place). A small rug in front of the door will complete the entrance.

I lvoe open spaces and yours looks wonderful – hopefull that all made sense lol…

Assumption : This is a dining cum living room and no space for dining table in kitchen area.

-Not sure whether you’ve bulky sofas or the sleek one’s. If it’s not huge and doesnt block the windows you can place it in left side[infornt of the
3 windows] and place arm chair on the left side, next to the entrance

    * In case you get a buy a matching love seat in future , you can put that in place of the now arm chair and the chair can be placed near the closet

    - Coffee table goes infront of the sofa.

    - Entertainment center , across the room – left side to the window[(middle of window and left corner closet)] and the curio cabinet on right side of the window (middle of window and right corner closet)

-Round Dining table , middle of the right corner closet and the kitchen door(so it’s easily accessible to kitchen).
