Update

I dont have any topics to write about. I mean how many times can you hear about what rude things people say or what NK and I fought about or even what cute things Samar did. I normally have twenty thousand things to write about, but not the last few days? weeks?

One of the reasons I think is because more people who know me in real life are reading me and this has made me use my internal self edit button. I type something out and think 20 mins and then hit backspace or just trash the whole post. Its not that they read me that bothers me. It thats fact that I would run into them next week at XYZ event and really do they need to know whats going on in my life?

The other reason is of course the move. I have been packing 2-3 boxes and going over in evenings and dropping stuff at the new house. I also spent hours surfing craigslist looking for furniture. I have been selling stuff as well. The most recent sale was NK’s skis. Which were carted over from Boulder and promptly laid to rest in the storage area and never seen the light of the day!

I have about 4-5 drafts lying around. One is Starry’s tag which is so far has only 1 thing. GO TO SCHOOL AND FINISH A DEGREE. I actually enrolled in a community college and will go in see the admissions counsellor on a Thursday when the kids get back to school. I told you I was busy.

Another draft I was composing is below

——————————————–

Sujatha(a blog reader here who lives close to me and isnt a stalker/serial killer)  sent me an invite to NYE party close to our house. It was cheap, close to our house and was bring your own alcohol. I fwded the invite to 2 of my other desi friends thinking they might want to come as well

Dance your way into 2010 to
Blockbuster Bollywood, Kollywood, and other great tunes.

The above is part of the email I forwarded to them.

Friend X calls me the next day, convo as follows

Me: I am going to the event and already paid. Are you interested

X:Nahi yaar, why did you buy tickets? Friend Y and I thought we would meet at my house.

Me: Oh, its boring at your place. We have a potluck, the men drink in the living room and we are in the kitchen. So I thought to do something different. plus they have music, we can dance and all.

X: Potluck nahi karte. We could have ordered food.Tumne dekha nahi, I think its for Southies ka liye hai. Hindi music nahi bajayenge.Mujhe nahi lagta North Indians ayenga.(We’ll not have a potluck. We can get take out. But I think its for South Indians only and no North Indians will come, plus they wouldnt play hindi music)

Me: I will go. We are North Indians right and so what about Music. we can dance to Tamil music.

I hang up thoroughly pissed off. In Singapore, my Tamil friends would go to Bhangra nights and my Punjabi friends watched Tamil movies with subtitles.I dont understand the tensions between the Indians here. I was dumb  confused when I was growing up in Singapore. I thought being Punjabi meant that you were Sikhs because all Punjabis in Singapore were Sikhs. I thought South Indian meant speaking Tamil.

It was after I got married that I realized the other languages and food that make up India. But still I cannot get over how horrible Indians can be to other Indians. The name calling and the saying of stuff like, Oh he is Gupta a baneeya and maha kanjoos.  I can go on and on about this shit but I will just end here.

U know this whole N.Indian and S.Indian drama is lil annoying to me too.. For example, Bangalore being the IT hub has a lot of immigrants here and people down south give them hell for not being able to speak the local language.. If u can speak a S.Indian language, they give u a concession for at least being a south indian…

Even in the north, when we have been there, since we speak atrocious Hindi, ppl jus look down upon u.. Its a shame that we have to worry about such stupid issues when they are bigger battles to be won as Indians..

Ooops, I think I went on a rant here :D

I hope they move is completed soon.. and U, Nk and the kids have a wonderful new year!!

Dee I have been at the brunt of that so often that I hate it… and from what I hear chennai is even worst

      1. Dee says:

        Tell me about it!!

In Tamil Nadu, ppl give DH such a glare when he talks or asks something haltingly!! Only when I back answer or speak in Tamil do they give us the right directions or help us out..

  3. Prashanti says:

ohh, the NI and SI rift is too much here in the US. In our place, its like a total divide. The SI and NI students mostly dont even hang out together :( . You go to that party and dance all you can okay, and I can tell you even if I dont understand tamil that they have awesome beats in their dance numbers !!

  4. Casual Visitor says:

North is north and South is south and never the twain shall meet. The divide is deeper than the Grand Canyon though the reasons are difficult to fathom. Being in IT which has a sizeable work froce from the southern states, I encounter these discussions very often. Disgusting to say the least.

And Wish You and your family a Rocking Year!!!

  5. shilpa says:

Go S! South Indian dance music is fun…and once you start to dance how does it matter what music it is….na?
    Happy new year!

  6. Aparna says:

who cares what music is playing..as long as I have a drink in my hands and a couple of fun people like yourself, I’m golden :)
Desis here make a big deal about everything..I think they are more stuck up than people back home…

  7. Lux says:

I hate this dividng ****..What you did is right, shouldn’t listen to all this crap and go and have a good time with people you think will give you company and not based on region/language….It’s there everywhere…south / north….aren’t we all Indians?

  8. Guddi says:

Will send you pics of our NY party so you can cry, ass!
You made the latter part of this year filled with more laughter, your followers followed me, your stories re-ignited by blog passion and your husband almost fell for me…. for that I thank you, ass woman!! :) )
MUAH.. Happy New year to you, the kids and NK.

  9. Sands says:

See that’s why you should come over to my new year party. We dance to Tamil, Marathi, Hindi and Punjabi music and when the party continues the guys even strum their imaginary guitars to Pink Floyd, the Doors and Queen :) And of course martinis and other cocktails rule!! Happy New Year girl!

  13. sakshi says:

A very happy new year to you and dishkyaooon to all those Indians who divide north and south…pahhh!!

just imagine my plight…being a south Indian married to a north Indian, most of the time I am neither here nor there!!! but yeah give me any music I am game for a party :)

  14. Beaulotus says:

Like you, I didn’t know there was such a divide among Indians until I left S’pore. Here in Modena, the divide is omnipresent among the Indians too, sometimes they won’t talk to each other (e.g. Southern vs Central) and they certainly call each other names! I think it is a pity that they couldn’t remain united especially when they are so far away from home.

Me: What even there they do that?. At least here(snotty bay area), there is a huge Indian population and they can afford to do that. But there, with a limited number of Indians?
