Monday MoneySavers(on Thursday)

The new kitchen begged for a bigger trashcan. I has a puny rubbermaid one in the old house under the sink. The new one demanded a shiny, step on,stainless steel wala trash can. Now trashcans can be ewwwy so I thought for once, I will buy something new. I scoured Amazon looking for one. The cheapest one I could find was $39.99. Hmm.. I didnt pull the trigger and left it in my cart.

Monday, I went to my 2nd most fav thrift store to again drop off stuff(did I mention my spring cleaning has reached all time high..in someones’s famous words, if it isnt useful or beautiful then it gets donated). The donation thing(Sujatha, it was StVinnies and the back part where we parked) is in the back of the store.  I parked and walked out with 2 trash bags. Dropped it off and then saw a stainless steel trash can right in front of me.My heart skipped a beat. I ran walked over and opened it. The pail inside even had its plastic sleeve intact. There was no price on it because it wasnt even on the floor. I asked the lady how much. She looks at it and says $15. I grabbed it with both hands and went to pay.Oh I also called NK and told him. And he just laughed and said only I can be so happy about buying a trash can.

I was all ready to buy it brand new. The thing was sitting in my Amazon cart…I was going to buy it.But then I see one  in a thrift store. What does SRK say in Om Shanti Om, agar dil sa chaho tum puri kayaanat(if you sincerely want something with your heart, the whole universe conspires to give it to you). Now the next thing I am hunting for a small table to fit in the nook in my kitchen for NKand me to have chai every morning. And, and a bar cart. I want one of those as well. Also maybe a Kunal Kapoor lookalike to start working in the thrift store as well.

Shiny, pretty

That is a great deal!!! I love that St Vincent store, all the stuff are so good looking…
I don’t know if you noticed the similar trash can in my kitchen and I got it for $50 or somethign in Bed,Bath and Beyond…
I hope you find a nice table and bar cart soon…

Me: I didnt notice but see I knew it was expensive.

  3. Guddi says:

Kachra dabba ko leke itni khushi tho jhaadu mila tho what will you say, ass

Me: Agar dyson ho tab khushi zarror hogi..ass

  4. bini says:

I need your fairy oops thrifting dust:)..You were so right about how sometimes we dont feel like decorating our home..I feel the same way about our current apt. I feel like I have no motivation to decorate it. We share it with the BIL so I dont feel like its my own place too:(..Hopefully we rent a place of our own soon and I can get all excited about decorating it!:)

Me: Crossing my fingers and toes that happens soon.

  5. Durga says:

I have a rubbish bin that looks exactly like that. hehe could they be trash twins? ;)

    Me: ;0

  6. aneela z says:

with your luck you WILL find a Kunal Kapoor type on purple tag (or was it yellow tag?) day. And they will throw in SRK to boot. im waiting for the monday saver post for THAT week!!!

Me: I was asking NK how to spell Kaayanat and he asked me why and whether I knew what that meant. I threw the OSO line at him and he asked, tumne bola ki Aneela na..:)
And I will bring back Kunal even if he is full price. Though I saw on HHC, that he has a scraggly beard now

  7. Perakath says:

I need one too! Wish we had thrift stores in Madras.

Me: I doubt thrift stores would ever come to India. Here people buy and donate their stuff. There, people recycle, give away and do endless things with their things.

  8. Archana says:

I’m a regular here..finally delurking. Had to ask where you get these awesome finds! ;) I live in the east bay…if you dont mind, could you share the details of this thrift store? i’ve never felt like shopping at thrift stores, but you’ve changed my attitude towards that!

btw, love your spirit and your honest writing!

Me: waves hello. Go to yelp.com and check out reviews for thrift stores in your area. I am sure you can find some. Good luck and happy hunting.

  9. Sonia says:

Hey call me..i miss u..have not spoken in ages! ANd yeah for trash can! Start shopping for me too need it when I move! :)

  10. Lakshmi says:

That is a pretty good trash can; roomy also.

Had to share; we got the kids a multi game table from craigslist last weekend for $15. S is having a great time sharing it with her friends :)

    Me: YAY!

  11. Sands says:

cool. Now am earnestly going to look for a thrift store that is half as good in my neck of the woods :) Guddi, want to join me?

Me: You should! Bring crazy Yo as well.

    • Guddi says:

As long as you know that we won’t be buying anything. Remember when I was teasing VD-ya about her garage sale buys and she was all offended and insisted that it was an “ESTATE SALE”! Wha-EV!

  12. Beaulotus says:

Wah nice find nice price. I’ve been eyeing a Brabantia but at more than a hundred euros apiece I’ve not found the courage (or excuse) to buy one.

In the Bible, they say “ask and you will be given, seek and you will find” ;-)

Me: Ohhh maybe its because I am in the church and so my prayers are being heard now. rofl. I didnt make Ayam Merah, no tomato paste and galangal, made stir fry silken tofu. Was taken back to poly days and eating economy rice. And the lemongrass is in a pot and I just used the leaves. I took the stem part once for something and it hasnt grown back yet so am leaving it along and using leaves for now

    • Beaulotus says:

Ahhh…so that’s the thing. Use the leaves, and I keep cutting them to throw away waiting for the stems to multiply – and that didn’t happen.

Me: I know in Singapore we used the stems right but I have like 3-5 stems in each pot so very precious lah. Though the lemongrass isnt very expensive here either.

  13. chooch says:

nice!that thrift fairy/angel seems to have stuck with you in the new year too:)please continue to post pics of your bargains…nothing like the thrill of doing up a space which you like…

Me: I like the vision of thrifty fairy. Have to use that tag when things I want magically appear in the thrift store. :)

  14. Broom says:

You know the BEST trash can I ever bought was a motion detecting one. When you wave your hand over the sensor the lid opens – you empty the trash & move away & the lid closes.

We loved it so much, it was like a pet asking for food at regular intervals.

    We still miss it!

Me: ohh I saw the Itouchless ones on Amazon, but I thought with 4 kids waving their hands all day long, it will be a matter of months before it broke. Thats why I went with the pedal thing.

  15. june says:

Nice! I went to the Savers in RC yesterday, it’s MUCH better than the one in M, which didn’t have a furniture section. Saw some nice stuff but not what we were looking for. I’ll have to go back more often so I can jump on newly donated items.

Me: Did you like it? You have to go to the St Vincent De Paul further down the st,across from Chucky E Cheese. A lot more furniture there but their prices are a bit higher. Though, bargaining does work(or wait maybe it was it low cut blouse :) . Psss..I edited the cities because hmm I might get stalkers rofl.

  16. lux says:

    Yay! good find.

btw, i got the email…hope the beautification/assignment of furniture is coming along well.

  17. roop says:

hahah what would NK know of the pleasure in saving pennies!! it’s an advantage us women have over them men. :D

  18. Krithiga says:

I have the same @ my place but bought it @ full price !

    Me:Trash Triplets rofl

  19. Uma says:

Heh, this is really cool. I’ve been randomly dipping into thrift stores, I do it more now then I used to since you’ve shown how great they can be, but haven’t had any luck with really great finds. Yelp is really useful for the most random stuff, I found my area thrift stores through it too.
Btw didn’t you mention earlier that you’d be posting links for thrift blogs, please do, I think lots of us would enjoy them.

Me:I will do a post soon on my fav thrifting blogs. But I want to say I am so proud of my readers(ha) who because of me are venturing into thrift stores. I will convert one person at a time.

  20. roisin says:

    fantastic!

  21. Prashanti says:

text me as soon as you find kunal kapoor at one of those thrift stores. I have been looking all around for him :)

    Me: :)

  22. Goofy Mumma says:

You are such a show off with your great finds S, you are a tease!
Anyways, have tagged you, so better go and pick it up from my new post.

Me: Ohhh nice..I will do it soon.

  23. Kiran Manral says:

I never thought I would see the day when I would fall in love with a trash can.

    Me: rofl

  24. Denise says:

I too would be exceptionally happy with a stainless steel trash can….!
