Massive Monday Moneysavers

Each week, I post one of my thrift finds, I think there is no fucking (since I am trying not to curse on the blog) way, I can top this find. From the $20 jewelery loot  to the vintages scarves, to the recent trash can findings…each week I think, I will have NOTHING to post, come Monday. But todays posting, today estate sale loot even took me by surprise..That says a lot.

I was up Sat night and on craigslist, looking for my tea/bar cart when I chanced upon an ad.This ad came up because of the search query I entered “TEA CART”.

I told NK I am going to this estate early Sunday morning. Got up at 730a/m, made chai, fed kids, took chai in travel mug and left house at 8 a/m.Reached sale place at about 835…Entering the house, this was one of the saddest estate sales I have ever been to. The owner’s vanity table had her picture, she had her perfumes left opened. It felt like she was away  in the bathroom and would be back in a minute.Needless to say, I left that room rather quickly.

I asked the dealer running the sale, why was such a sad feeling to it. And he replies, that is a very weird question. I explained the deal about the vanity table and he said, the owner’s kids didnt want anything from this house. And he has already had the things for sale for quite some time and people just threw her stuff around, hunting for bargains.. Sad na?

But coming to what I bought.. Hold your hearts, Take a deep breath!

…….

*Gasp* Shock * Guess how much I paid

I paid $15 for the whole lot on this table. I know. I want to kill myself too. The china you see is this pattern. Go ahead, click on the link and see what prices the china goes for.

The fabric you see on the chairs, the dealer gave them to me to wrap up the dishes. It has a price tag on it. It was bought in 1971.

Sterling Silver

I found these flatware badly badly tarnished(forgot to click the before picture) in one of the kitchen drawers. Upon scrutinizing the writing on the back, it was marked, Royal Danish IS,I just grabbed all the tarnished ones and thought I would use the polish and see what happens. Upon googling, here is what I  found. Check out the end of the spoons in the page and check my spoons.

The spoons are in crystal candy jars thing. I know you are dying at this point but I have more…

The alcohol you see in the pictures, given to me FREE OF CHARGE. They are vintage unopened bottles. There is one really large bottle of Scotch whisky and a Triple Sec. Alcohol never ever goes bad!(I think) And I like the minature decoratives ones

Free Alcohol..

Coming to the reason of why I went to the sale,

The pretty delicate teacups are part of $15 haul

Check out the pretty inlay work. The rings you see are for holding wine/alcohol bottles.

This was $20. AT a antique store, it can easily go for $150?

I know there is no way I can top this. Wait, unless my Kunal Kapoor look-alike wish comes true.

Wow, Love love the tea cart and also the delicate cups… I want to see how and where do you use this cart…

Me:Right now, its stuck in a corner of the living room. The top needs to be glued down to the legs. And then I will set up my mini bar. The delicate tea cups so pretty…so delicate, I have used them twice now for chai.

  3. suja says:

Forgot to mention, I had the same pattern of 12 place setting china when I first came to US. Guess where we got it ? In a OH flea market but I think we paid around $45 for the set…

  6. aneela z says:

you know it is kind of ironic but this post and your words about the woman “who would be back in a minute”made me realize I should hoard less (as in be less attached to material possessions) and use all the “good stuff” I keep on saving for the day The Queen arrives, you know what I mean. …in the end we all go away and all the stuff remains “unappreciated” unless of course you come along!! Love you babe.

Me: I dont think you are the kind of hoarder, I have seen existing here. But Aneela, do use your stuff everyday. The good china, the nice salwaar suit, the pretty handbag. Why to wait for company or occasion. I am trying to find a nice Bollywood dialogue but failing. Will ask NK.

  7. supmm says:

Me: I knew you would die of jealousy.

    • Goofy Mumma says:

God S! I so wish I lived next door to you, and could go with you to all these super interesting and unbelievable bargains, shopping expeditions. You do have a knack don’t you? I am sure not everyone gets such great deals.

  11. Shilpa says:

That’s a beautiful cart. Are those napkin rings a part of the loot too? Love them all abd mighty jealous.

Me:Yes, 8 in 2 boxes, pottery type piece with butterflies on it. Avasha asked me what are they for and I showed her and you can see she used one on the table.

  12. Perakath says:

Good jawb! Reminds me of this Roald Dahl short story called “Parson’s Pleasure”– but with a happy ending!

Me: Dude I am not a unscrupulous dealer. I dont re-sell my things and neither do I cheat people..:)

  13. Suki says:

Fuck. No, that did NOT happen.

    Me: It did. Suki. sorry.

Me: You guys need to leave the kids with your spouses and plan a thrifting trip. Take pictures and remember details, so that you can write the most awesomest post.

  15. Miss M says:

    FIFTEEN BLOODY DOLLARS?!!

    NO FREAKING WAY!

Me: I dont carry much cash with me. You know this right. Most estate sales only take cash. I tend to have at the most $50 with me. I couldnt believe it myself when he said $15 for everything

You are lying S. You just want us to get all jealous and turn the darkest shade of green!!! You are lying right?? Yes? No?? NO?? SERIOUSLY, FIFTEEN DOLLARS FOR THE WHOLE LOT?!!!?! I mean.. how many plates are there exactly..and tea cups?! And dude, those spoons actually cost a BOMB! Waaaah. I am moving to the states JUST so that I can shop at thrift stores! :P

Me: We counted 15 tea cups, god knows how many soup bowls, dinner plates, there is one big oval platter, countless bread/butter plates.

    • Miss M says:

Yes exactly god knows how many soup bowls and dinner plates!
This is one good deal S! Seriously! You lucky lucky woman. :) I can only imagine how lovingly and proudly you are going to display your brand new cutlery to your guests when you host dinner parties etc. ;)

Me: I had a friend over and she had chai in our delicate cups and lunch in the new dishware.

  16. M says:

    HOLY CR**!!!!

that is some seriously good karma you have lady! The sterling took my breath away…and the original prices…yikes!

    M

  17. bini says:

Awesome..May you have many more such thrifting expeditions:). You deserve nothing but the best!.How did you lug all the back home? Did they wrap it and give it you? All your thrifting and decorating the house stories makes me all the more want to move into my own place..:)..Im very bad at home decoration though..Though I keep stuff organized..I hope I can spice up the next home I own/rent :)

Me: I used the fabric you see in the background to wrap up each piece and then the dealer gave me boxes. It filled up around 3-4 boxes I think. He also gave me totes for the glasses.

  18. Doli says:

You’ve been tagged at my blog magicofpages.blogspot.com :)

Me: Off to check it out.

  19. Prashanti says:

Shit !!!!!!! No way was I even imagining this good a haul :( Seriously you have topped allllll your thrifting trips with this one !!! man the china looks so pretty and the bar cart is awesome :)

Me: right? I have to retire my series. I can never ever top this. I know

  20. You know, I should avoid reading your money saver Mondays… breathing went up higher with each picture..until I got the giddy feeling by the end ;)

    $15…maar dala!

Me: Oye you are preggo. Take deep breaths.

AWESOME is not even the right word.

You are too good at this, none to beat..am sure!

  21. Silvara says:

So so pretty – and omfg what a bargain!! wish we had the same kinda thrifting attitude here in Aus :P

  22. Smitha says:

Wow! I am speechless! I so wish we had such sales here! You are a total pro at this!

  23. Angie says:

You got vintage fabric! I love it! Now you need to whip something up on a sewing machine with that fabric. That’s quite a haul. Where are you going to put all those dishes? Good for you for the great bargains. I think I need to head out to where you live because you would NEVER find those bargains around here.

Me: I have the top of the kitchen cabinets empty. Thats where the dishes went. The barware went into the hutch and some will go on the bar cart..I am not a sew er.. I dont know what I will do.And you need to schedule a conference here,

    • Angie says:

You could even make some very simple napkins. All you’d have to do is cut it and hem it. Straight lines! I could send you a link to a tutorial.

  24. couchpapaya says:

OMG what an amazing haul! And, the tea table is just gorgeous (hmm never thought I’d use the word for a piece of furniture heh)!! Love the detail and those bottle holders on the bottom. Do post a pic when you’ve set it all up.

I cant believe the owners didnt want the booze .. I mean great that you got it (enjoy the margaritas :) , but don’t you think it’s weird that they actually had it for sale??

Me: I know right? This was a very weird sale. NK keeps telling me that the soul of the former owner will come haunting me.

  25. V says:

    Speechless!

    Absolutely amazing haul :)

  26. Beaulotus says:

Breathless, speechless, choking, bowling over, fainting…

Girl, you are one lucky bitch.

But at least that woman’s stuff is now in a place where people will appreciate them.

Can’t believe you got those sterling cutlery for that price…those kids of hers are mad. I want my mom’s stuff when she’s gone, even tupperware. Old things, her things, are good. Something to remember her by.

Me: I was talking to the dealer. And he said its so common for the kids NOT to take their parents things. because they have so much of their own and no space to put it. I dont kno..I cannot imagine throwing away a whole household of things….

  27. Sands says:

lovely pieces. That’s an awesome deal :)

  28. lux says:

My oh my , very good find gurl…as always, am impressed :)

One question though, please don’t get me wrong – do you use all of those small plates that came with the set? I don’t know, but even when we have guests over i use only dinner plates and dessert bowls.Never ever have
served chai/coffee with saucers.I know it’s cute, but i feel it’s kinda gives a very formal feeling for the guests and ourselves…may be it’s just the lazy me thinks that way.

Me: A friend came over and I used the small plate for the naan. And then we had chai in the pretty tea cup. It felt special. The food tasted better. rofl

Btw, I went for my second thrift shopping on the weekend to a nearby goodwill store. I found the pieces expensive like the decortive balls to fill vases(brand new ) which had the original price as 30, was marked at 13 bucks .So was wondering whether i was looking at wrong store or something.

Me: It can be hit or miss. Some things can be priced high, some low.. You just need to keep on trying and find the one that has good things at low prices.

  29. Wow, AMAZING haul!!! I’m jealous and impressed!

I couldn’t seem to get to the link with the china. I don’t know if the link isn’t working or if it’s just me, but wanted to point it out!

Me: waves hello. There was plate with the price listed on that site but I think it was sold.. I updated it with another link. Thank you.

  30. OMG…congratulations, you sure hit the mother lode when you got everything for $15! I don’t think you will ever top that…I know I won’t! Enjoy everything to the max…
    Have a great weekend.

Me:waves hello. I am sure I will NEVER top this.

  31. jennifer says:

This thrifting story will be legend. There is no way to top it and it will go down in history!

    LOVE the tea cups!

    Me:rofl! I think so too.

  32. WSW says:

    For real!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG *turning a very unappealing shade of green*
