Monday Moneysavers

Another week, another monday. Another garage sale. Another hunting of craigslists ad. Someone else left me a comment saying I am addicted(which I deleted because its my blog and I can do whatever I want). Yes, you are right. I am addicted. Addicted to finding treasures at the cheapest price. Call me cheap. Call me broke. Call me greedy. Call me green. Call me anything. It doesnt matter.

Pyrex bowls. Paid $3 for the bigger and $1 for the smaller one

I was talking to the guy running the sale. I asked, did the owner die. He shakes his head and says no. She just kept on ordering stuff from QVC and other infomercials. She did it for years and she never even opened most of it. And then, one day, she got tired of it and landed up on her daughter’s doorsteps, telling her daughter, she is sick and tired of her QVC crap and she wants her daughter to handle it. WOW.

What does that say about that poor woman? NK’s theory is that she was an insomniac and couldnt sleep and so was buying stuff. Mine was how the hell did she have so much money? Is her house in her foreclosure now? I kid you not guys, her backyard was full of the boxes her stuff was in. The pots and pans I bought  still had the plastic sleeve intact.

Now the above was the practical Sraikh. This lady had beautiful stuff. Stuff that a mom with little kids shouldnt have. And shouldnt lust after.Stuff that one shouldnt waste money on.Early Sat morning, I went back to her house with more cash.( I carry at the most $30 at one time. )

Hello Ganesha! Aromatherapy burner $1

 and certainly not this

Oil burner. $5

Pairs are easier to decorate with. $5 for its twin as well

This is mulbery scented candles. I doubt, I would EVER light the candles.

They came wrapped in this box. The kids had fun with the cardboard rolls for a long time

See the plate is wrapped with plastic

You see the brass plate the candles are on. It came with instructions on how to place the candles. She had about 5 boxes of these candles, White, red, green, yellow and another one. All unwrapped and in boxes like this. I bought red and green. I spent $21 on Sat.In case anyone is keeping track. After that sale, I drove to a church rummage sale, where I spent $4 on this.

Napkins

I am going to  be hosting a tea party for Ashwina’s girl scout’s troop. I am on the hunt for a tea pot and multiple saucer plates and candlesticks to make individual cupcake stands as party favors for the girls. I am very excited.

Tomorrow, new flowers I bought from the beach.

WoW….Good deals except for the oil burners.Loved the stew and small stainless steel pots

  2. Anon says:

Ok..I have commented earlier once and you may delete this.
But since I read you, I think I have a right to write my opinion.
Your moneysavers are getting boring…I dont think I can shop EVERY week and sometimes twice a week for household things…except for grocery and essential items.. I might do this kind of shopping may be once in 6 months.. unless ofcourse I have landed in a NEW place with only clothes, which obviously you are not.
Take a cue from the trolls and ur husband and put in some brake over your shopping…and give us sensible posts…i started reading u for weight loss and here i am …reading ur ‘on the spurt’ shopping posts..ok you might say that they are not ‘on the spurt’ but they definitely dont look like essential items to me.

Me: See I dont know whether I should delete your comment. If you had asked nicely for weight loss or fitness post, I would have told you my next post was going to be about that, since I joined the YMCA and am signing up for another 5k race but because you didnt. I am going to hold off writing that post.

    • Goofy Mumma says:

Darling, she blogs coz she wants to, and she will blog about whatever she fancies. She never claimed this is a weightloss fitness blog, did she, that is one part of her life, just as is her shopping. Why are you passing a judgment? If you would not do such shopping, or are not liking it, don’t read na! About weightloss, go and google, you will find 1 million ways of doing it, besides blogs completely dedicated only to weightloss n fitness. I just find it mean when you talk like that you don’t know, and then you also go on to show you know you are wrong, because you keep your self anonymous. This isn’t nice!

      • Goofy Mumma says:

OK, I wrote that comment, when I was angry, so obviously I have missed out words n expressions, I am just correcting one entire part of it!

Same or diff trolls? Gosh what a jerk..This person seems to be setting some expectation level for ur blog:P…When we blog we write what we feel like not what XYZ or Anon wants to read:)…This is the world wide web and nobody’s holding you at gunpoint to asaaan.com..I cant believe such characters exist..

Me: Different from the keeping track one. Different countries. But I have noticed, once I publish one crazy comment, the rest of the crazies come out of the woodwork as well

      • Roisin says:

Wow, what a ridiculous comment ANON, its her blog and she can bloody well write whatever she pleases. And I’m not sure how more SENSIBLE a money saving post could be

Me: Muaahs. I love you guys and how you all stick up for me.. HUGS

    • Angie says:

The thing is, this is Sunita’s blog. She gets to choose her content. If she’s blogging to make everyone happy, it because less about what makes her happy and why should she care about making YOU happy? That’s not what it’s about, unless she’s looking to profit in some way from her blogging in the form of advertising and increased numbers. So while you’re welcome to go elsewhere for weight loss posts, this is Sunita’s place to blog about her life. And as it happens, her interest in bargain shopping is part of her life. It’s incredibly self-centered and entitled of you to think it should be about what you want because no one is forcing you to read the blog.

Me: You sound so mature and adult like. My first instinct is to always say f!ck you to anyone rude comments. Then I backspace and think about what I want to reply.

    • Denise says:

I love it. Anon…you should identify yourself and send us to your blog so we can see how much more interesting you are! My 14 yr. old daughter says….”low self-esteem is bad for the environment”!

If Macy’s doesn’t have a good sale or carry what you want, you would probably go somewhere else….right? Probably not because you only shop every six months.

asaaan has had trouble with weight…however, she’s lost a lot of it and has come a long way! For her to share her story with us…is very kind of her. How could we benefit from you? Perhaps you could blog about your disgusting ways of being harsh! thank you …have a nice day you freaken troll! lmao

Me: You are way too nice Denise.

  3. Durga says:

Pyrex bowls are great and last forever (unless u have toddlers).
    i like your monday posts.
    Did u see this: http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Parenting/mom-feeds-family-week/story?id=8463295
“MOm feed a family of 6 for $4 a week”…yup every single meal!!!
Half a watermelon costs $6 here in Sydney :(

Me:Thats one thing I never got the hang of. Couponing. I buy most of my groceries in bulk at Costco. Coupons were never my thing. I read that article, very inspiring.

  4. Smitha says:

WOW! That is called finding deals! I actually came here to tell you that I found a charity shop with lots of lovely china but haven’t had a chance to buy because I haven’t had a chance to go there and browse. I would not even have looked at the shop if I hadnot read your blog :) Just waiting to go there and look at the stuff. I went there to give a lot of clothes- barely worn clothes of daughter’s which are as good as new, when I saw some lovely china.

Me: Dont you feel when you are moving houses, it feels good to get rid of crap? I donated and sold so many things.

As for those mean commentators – they are just plain jealous that you get all these lovely stuff at throwaway prices :)

    Me: I dont know!

    • Smitha says:

Oh yes, I am trying to clear as much space as possible.. There are so many things which are hardly used, you know.. Especially Poohi’s clothes which she has outgrown. Even some of her toys which she does not touch, I give off to charity – someone is sure to want them.

  5. Prashanti says:

OMG these stuff are awesome at those prices. The stew pot is sexy !! and I cannot stop gushing over how cute the ganesha is on the skate board. :)

Me: NK brought it over during his last trip.Cute na? Samar brought it for show and tell one week.

  6. Never Mind says:

I love the oil burners. And I would never light those delicious candles, as well.

  7. AP says:

You are totally awsome. I wish I was near you to learn a thing or two about how to find these totally awsome deals.

    Me: Aww thanks.

  8. The stew pot makes me weak in the knees. I am so glad I don’t live near you. We’d have no money to feed the dog

    Me: rofl.

  9. blinkandmiss says:

You’re so good at this stuff, that I had to comment once I got back from work.
For some reason I am unable to comment from work.

    1. Open a store/garage store whatever that sells these amazing handpicked items (of which you’re totally the queen by now), at unbelievably low prices.

    2. Name it Pandora’s Box – coz you never know what’s coming next!!!

    3. You make money, so you happy. We who aren’t moneysaving gods/goddesses, just shop at your store. So we too happy.

Take a bow, woman – really!!

Me: I like the name of the store. I was reading another blog and her business is(amongst others) is thrift store personal shopper. Which I though was such a awesome job.

  10. Looooooved the oil burners. Liked everything else.

Only thing I dont see as a deal is the pyrex set. I bought pyrex set (2 brownie trays, 3 bowls, a meauring cup, all with lids) brand new for $20 at BB&B.

That stew pot looks happy :)

Me: I thought soo too. He had the squara walas for $10.They cost that much brand new.

  11. Beaulotus says:

Great buys, love those pots and pyrex. Just don’t ever put the pyrex on the stove like I did, crack – and I just brought it all the way back from Singapore!

Me: you remember one of the blue pots, I bought when I was in my old house. It cracked. :(

  12. june says:

OK I don’t get why people write those nasty comments. What did that person get out of leaving that? You don’t like reading about thrift store stuff, just go away!

Anyways, having said that, your place is looking SO awesome! I’m so glad we got a chance to see it on Friday (and eat your delicious cooking).

Also, I think some of your shopping karma rubbed off on me, because on Saturday morning, I decided to buy a used sofa for the boys’ playroom. I went to the Ikea site to pick a sofa – it was $300 new. Then I went to Craigslist to see if anyone was selling it – and it was the FIRST thing that came up in my search, the EXACT sofa I wanted down to the color, for $75!! It is in great condition. So, now it’s sitting in the playroom. Thanks!! =)

  13. Goofy Mumma says:

Nice finds again S. You plan to find, the cups n saucers, and actually out them together for individual party favours? Wow! Would love to see how that works out.

  14. sakshi says:

It’s your blog and you definitely can write anything you fancy about….Anon’s who have a problem with that can simply browse a million plus blogs of their likings and put their two cents there…

Meanwhile I am staring at those pots you got…it’s simply gorgeous. Gosh you live in California dontcha?? I am yet to see such Sales in this part of the place.

  15. Roisin says:

I love the linens! and I LOVE the idea for the tea party! cant wait to see pics of that!

  16. V says:

Love the stew pot, candles and all. I never seem to find anything like you do..:)

  17. Uma says:

I love these posts about your finds posts so please don’t stop them. I don’t get how people can be so nasty, seriously ignore the trolls and just delete unless they are entertaining. And “Anon” reading a blog doesn’t give you the right to say anything you please to the author. Would you say the same things to a friend or even an acquaintance. Maybe you would in which case most people are lucky to not know you in real life :)

  18. Poppy says:

OMG these trolls don’t have a life. Why are they hell bent on telling people how to write their own personal blogs?

I’m going to say that forget all the deals and all that (yeah, if I don’t forget I might get very very jealous) I love how you can spot a buy and know how to use it in your home. I could never do that – I’m constantly buying all the wrong things (and that too at expensive prices ) and hate myself afterwards.

  19. Neelum says:

That stew pot is awesome !!! The oil burners are oh so cute….infact the entire purchase is superb !!
Please don’t bother about what people think about you…to me you are a Guru….and I myself always look out for bargains.

    Neelum from KL, Malaysia

  20. Smitha says:

Ok.. I’ve lurked around for ages, but never commented. But Ms/Mr Anon had me fuming. I read tons of blogs, and not all of them only post on topics I like. Its so much easier to skip over those posts and find something else to read or do than sit there all high and mighty and compose a nasty comment telling someone what they should be posting on THEIR OWN BLOG!! Just boggles the mind.

Asaaan, I love you and find you so inspiring. Let the trolls take a hike.

Me: Awww the love. Thanks for delurking. I tend to ignore the crazy comments most of the time. but once in a while, I approve a random one to show the craziness that is out there..:)

    I agree, don’t delete them.
    They add punch.
What do plan to do with those candles?
