Living Room Update

Remember my whole dilemma about placing of the living room furniture. I am too lazy to go hunt in my archives but I did a mock up in photoshop and put it here and FB and so many friends replied. Silvara actually sent me back her version of the mockup.

Anyways, we moved and we threw furniture in the living room as we brought them up the stairs. I didnt like how the sofa was placed..nor how NK’s curio cabinet was blocking one of my window’s light. I let it be though because NK can be a bit stubborn like that. But then Wed night, something happened and to let go of the anger and stress building in me, I decided I had to move furniture around.(instead of drinking)

This is how this corner used to be

This is what I( and NK) did.In case you were wondering, the tall golden thing on the top of the curio, is a Christmas tree thing, oldest child made in school. Its different kinds of macroni and then spray painted gold.

The chair is a 99cent find from Savers.

The chair needs a bit of work done. I dont think I can do it. Have listed it on craiglist and see whether anyone bites.

The curio goes across the room. The sofa is placed against the wall. The previous arrangement( which I dont have a photo of), I had the sofa where the ottoman is now and the armchair where the sofa is.

Nice hai na?

This is the 2nd part of the long assed living room. The first part still needs a lot of work. Like for example how to cover the fuckingwires. or should I try and sell this computer table and get a sleek(er) one. Nk likes this table though. Its apparently very well-made.

Oh..those cards in the windows. Samar’s valentines from his classmates. The other kids will come back with theirs today and we will place them in the window. If I remember, I will take a picture from the outside of the church.

Pss:Tomorrow’s post will be of NK’s treasures in the curio cabinet

How do you keep those plants alive?? If I could, I’d have lots and lots of plants in my house but I’m a serial plant killer :(
The second picture looks lovely..I can see myself sitting there reading and drinking coffee on a rainy day..

Me: I dont know. Just water, place them in different corner. Empty water when in saucer. Doesnt take much. Try a spider plant or a money plant. Those are tough to kill.

I love the corner with the plants and that chair looks goood. What work does it need ??? That makes a lovely reading corner :)

Me: It has a hole in the backrest and the cushion needs reupholstering. I bought it because it was $1.:)

I am amazed at you craigslist finding capabilities:) I called but they did not answer. Will have to try again.

Me:I told you. I have special powers.

  3. Perakath says:

Is that where you blog from? Child is very small!

Me: I use a lap top. In the dining room.

The living room looks very cozy and i like the chair by the window(the arrangement)…

also bit envious with all that sun showing up through the window..we have at least another 3 more months of winter and lake effect snow to struggle with…hmm

Me:The sunny Bay Area. This is why a 1000sqft 50ish era house cost 900k

  5. Angie says:

To “cover” the wires, you could get a length of cheap black fabric (or any color, really) and tack it to the back of the table, then run the wires behind it (between the fabric and the wall). It creates a kind of false back, and cleans up the look of the wires. If you wanted to hem the fabric on the three sides not tacked to the table, you could do it easily without sewing. Buy a product called stitch-witch (or something similar, ask at the fabric store). It allows you to do a stitch-free kind of “gluing” of the hems instead, to give the fabric a neater appearance. Also, one last thing, if you want the fabric to be a little stiffer, just give it a good spray with spray starch.

Me: Ohhh..I will try it. Thanks Angie. do you hate me for the chai thing?

    • Angie says:

      What? No! Why would I?

Me: because I keep promising you that I will come up with achai post for whippedout. I just saw that you have a post up. Awesome

  6. Your plants look awesome. So does your LR. Well lit and “lived-in”.

    Me: thanks TPL

  7. AverageJane says:

Nice! About the indoor plants: how often do the pots have to go out for sunning?

Me: hmm never.:) The window light is enough so far

  8. Never Mind says:

Your multi-tiered plant holder is awesome. I like the new layout better. One thing I have learnt recently is to not be afraid of putting things around windows.

  9. Beaulotus says:

Very sunny and airy place you have, love the wooden flooring and the so-many windows.

You did a good job, my place is a perpetual mess…

    Hon, check this out.

In this example they put it behind the table but we have similiar crap from Ikea which the viking mounted under the table. We no longer have a single wire floating around anywhere, collecting dust bunnies.

I swear i only keep him around cos of how handy he is.

Me: That’s the easiest thing. And I see those wire things at the thrift store all the time. I will pick one up the next time, I am there

  11. Mom Gone Mad says:

D-uh. forgot to say how much I love the light and what you’ve done;-)

Love the new living room layout of the sofas. Big improvement. And I wish you didn’t have to get rid of the chair, it looks so good in that nook. I think you could totally redo it yourself. Let’s talk about it.

As for the computer cables and such, I’ve been thinking of this too! This is what I want to do one of these days. You twist tie everything to a pegboard that you then attach under the desk or against the wall: http://ikeahacker.blogspot.com/2007/03/declutter-your-jerker-desktop.html

Here are two other great suggestions:

    1. Use a Z-shaped wooden wall:

    2. Hide everything in a cabinet:

Can you tell I love ikeahacker?

Me: you went into spam because you put more than 3 links. I love the Z wall..I am going to try Angie’s fabric wall because I have fabric and I can just thumback it…And if that doesnt work then something from here..

  15. Goofy Mumma says:

Gorgeous S. The room looks so bright and lively. I love your plants in the house. I have completely stopped having indoor plants, need to do something about that! Love the room. Really!

  16. I’ll be honest S…am so jealousnow! :(

Adore the house for its light and spacious look and feel (we pay a big rent for ours but got a crappy deal .. our fault totally, yes, yes).

The green plants are so well placed too!

Gives me a feeling that your home must be really sweet smelling with such a nice appeal:)

Me: You must come over. After the baby or before? Your call :)

  17. Sujatha says:

    Very pretty !!!

  18. Silvara says:

I think it looks great!! You have so much lovely light coming in that the corner with chair looks so inviting :D

Hmm…had so much fun helping you as well…sigh…if i only I could do that as a career :D

Me: Thanks Siggy. I am in love with my church-house.

  19. Goofy Mumma says:

S, how do you get your furniture kind stuff from wherever you buy it? Do you have a huge SUV, or a trailer to get those things home, like your hutch or the chair here for that matter. I find nice things online, but my biggest problem is the transportation so I let go.

Me: I drive a minivan. NK has a SUV. We both can fold down the back seats if needed to.

  20. Durga says:

Lovey room. especially the that window area with the indoor plants. I’m curious…what do you have in your glass show case cabinet thing? looks lovely.

    Me: Tomorrow’s post for shure.

  21. Denise says:

I love the plants and the chair in the corner (if you will sit there and read a book)? You could always use the hallway as a photography wall – or you can get a smaller desk at (Ikea – for $35.00) and put the computer by the window. Tie up all the wires when your all situated with pull ties.

  22. roisin says:

S its looks fantastic!!! really gorgeous and very comfortable! BTW you can find these plastic channels at hardware stores for a few dollars that are used to channel the wires, they stick on to the wall and are paintable to hide them more. home depot will have them.

  23. Abha says:

    the home looks lovely!! :)

i want to do some indoor plant thing too, but knowing lack of green thumbs, i am just not sure! sigh!

    cheers!
