The First Project

I had my first sewing lesson on Thursday. It was a one on one for 2 hours.  The instructor showed me how to thread the machine, how to use the bobbin. She was amazed at the machine. She couldnt believe how well it was stitching. We only had time to try one other feet. A narrow hemmer. For now, I am going to use the regular feet and as I get more confident, I will try the Monster Ruffler and the other feet that came with it.

If you have been reading this blog, you would know a) I am like an instant gratification kinda person, b) I also like making things really easy for myself(though that totally contradicts the 4 kids). For my first project, I decided to make a a tshirt shrug. Simple right. A tshirt which you cut up and sew. I ransacked the girls’s closet and and found a yellow tshirt. And I whipped this up in like 10-15 mins tops.  If one doesnt look too closely at the stitches, it looks fantastically wellmade.

Notice the "ribbon" used to tie

No ribbons so I used one of Ashwina’s new laces.  I might also get some ric rac or lace and attach it to the sleeve and the collar. Which might be overly ambitious but oh well…whats the worst that can happen?

I totally would make one for myself but I am too well endowed in the chest area!

how tough is using a machine? im thinking of buying a small sewing m/c myself to do little stuff like hemming and altering..tailors charge a bomb here!

Me: It takes a bit of practice. Its not too hard to learn though.

Cool !!! I regret that I did not learn basic sewing because I thought that was too “womanly” when my mom told me to. I soo want to make pretty cushion covers and curtains now :(

Me: I know right? But its never too late to learn anything.

    Hi,

Congrats. Sewing is just an addictive hobby. Believe me ,it’s really simple one. This is coming from a person who was never allowed to use her sister’s sewing machine because I broke the neeedles everytime she tried to teach me. In US, I started with a simple basic machine initially and sew beautiful gowns for my 4 yrs old niece. Now I am kind of very comfortable sewing and have mid range one.

Before you start using your antique machine to the fullest capacity , make sure you can get the spare parts and needles for the machine. One, it is really costly ,two since it is very old they may no longer manufacture the required needles/parts. And lastly sewing machine repairs are costly even basic machine tuneup cost up to $60 for a low end machine.

You can buy patterns from Joann and other stores . You will be amazed to see the results if you use patterns.

BTW, I purposely gave my blog name in the email area so that you’ll know my blog address.

    To munchinkin’s mom :

Hello. Lately I have been reading your blog. I loved your train cake : ). It is very very easy and simple to use a machine. Walmart/Joan has a machine for starters (but it has lots of stitch patterns) for $80 . Nothing can beat this offer since even simple tune up cost around the same price .

Me: I dont know about buying patterns yet. I am having too much fun finding tutorials that cut up tshirts and tank tops. Oh you know I did ask the instructor what she thought of the machine and whether I need to bring it in for a tune up. She said no..it works fine so far so to leave it. Hopefully I wouldnt kill it..:)

SURELY you’re not an instant gratification type of person – not when you’ve been so patient with your weight loss program! :) I only wish I could be as patient and determined as you’ve been in losing weight… I get disheartened so easily. :(

    Me: I will email you.
