Monday Moneysavers

Whats that SRK says? The one Aneela keeps saying, the one about kayanat and universe. I pick up a sewing machine and find sewing classes close by. I need fabric and what do I find..

FABRIC!

My favourite four out of the pile

Someone giving fabric away for FREE on CL. Yup I got the fabric for FREE.. My favourite 4 letter word.

Nk bought these for me

Because he loves me

I finished my 2nd project. From a 25cent garage sale find tank top

Size 22/24 Tank top

into this bag

I threw in 3-4 books from the library

I used this tutorial. It literally took me 3 mins, One to do the straight stitch down and 2 for the side angles. Now Ashwina is having a party in 2 weeks. What do you guys think of this idea? If I made 19 of these bags in different sizes/colors and gave it to the girls to decorate at the party. I would have a hot glue gun and different material out that they  can use to.Pompoms, feathers, fabric glue/glitter Maybe even have a thread and a needle if they want to sew stuff on.

I was going to have them decorate flip flops but this idea seems so much better. Not only its green and eco-friendly and useful(hello tote for library /school) but it would be cheaper for me! I can find cheap tank tops everywhere. If you were a mom of one the girls attending the party, would you  be disgusted? Or can you even tell its a tanktop. Technically no one needs to know the bag used to be a tank top. I can pretend to have superior sewing skills and claim I made it from scratch. Opinions?

ETA:  3 more tote-bag completed and one very reluctant model who refuse to to carry the girl bag-

In between picking Neil, laundry and making lunch..

He kept asking is it done. Can I put down the bag.

Awesome! I think that’s a fantastic idea – creative yet cheap. I wouldn’t be disgusted at all… impressed, definitely.

  2. Prashanti says:

The fabrics are soo pretty !! What are you going to make outta them ??? To me, the decorating idea seems good. I would not mind even if I knew that thee were made outta tank tops.

Me: I am going to try an easy skirt for Avasha. And another one might be the pants Priya had linked in one of the posts below *if* I decide to try and cut the fabric.

  3. Kemma Parker says:

Oh man, that is WAY better than flip-flops!!!!! You are the crafty-creative QUEEN. Those girls will have SO MUCH FUN decorating bags, and you don’t have to worry about the bags not fitting (a problem I had once when we did decorated flip flops a few summers ago)

Me: Hmm but you have to pretend NOT to know that the bags were in fact tanktops..Ashwina did ask everyone’s shoe size but I am too lazy to go hunt down flip flops now

  4. Neha says:

I think the bags are a much better idea, even if one knows those used to be tank tops… they look so pretty anyway! If you insist on them not knowing, I can tell you that in Neil’s picture (LOL@ making the hapless boy pose for THIS picture), nobody can make out that it’s made out of a tank top.

Me: The child came back and loved it. NK came back and said they were horrible and I shouldnt make. We took one to the library to do a test run. We stuffed it with books and it stretched which was kinda of cute. I made another smaller one (Avasha’s pink tank top ) and she loved hers.

    • Neha says:

Then that settles it.. tell NK they’re not for him! :D Kids love it = gooooood party idea!

One suggestion though: I think the plain ones would be more suitable for decorating, as opposed to the printed ones.. those can be used as they are, I feel

  5. Rohini says:

I think it is a fantastic idea. What does the birthday girl think about it?

Me: She loves it. She wants me to get the plain tank tops because they are more fun to decorate. She also wants to put her sequins and do a flower design.

  6. aneela z says:

only the green and white striped one looks like it was a tank top in its previous life!!! i would say go for it as part of the girls evening in activity

  7. Goofy Mumma says:

Gorgeous stuff S! Well made, and atleast from the pics, i can’t tell they are made from Tank Tops!!

  8. Abha says:

i think its awesome!! and a great idea! am sure girls will have fun decorating em!

and poor son of yours!! :p

    cheers!

  9. blinkandmiss says:

Amazing idea! And if I was one of the moms sending my child to your place, I’d call you up to find out how you stitched it. They don’t look like they’re made from a tank top, except maybe that green one, but I may be just nitpicking. Your daughter must be so proud of you!

Neil looks cute posing with the bag. :)

Me: I had to bribe him with 2 red skittles.

  10. Smitha says:

That is such a wonderful, wonderful idea! I am amazed at the rate at which you get these fantastic ideas! It is so perfect for the party!

I am sure the girls will love it!

Me: What did we do with the Internet? Seriously!

  11. Aparna says:

I Know jack about stitching and Sewing but what do you think about adding Buckram in the bottom, for some shape ??

Me: I dont even know what that is. Had to google it. Interesting stuff..

  12. Angie says:

Remember just a few months ago when I was trying to get you to sew a simple curtain to hide your cords? Now look at you!

    Me: rofl.

  13. AP says:

This is a great idea. I personally would not mind knowing that you made these bags out of a tank top. Afterall, no one is wearing these bags. If you really think that parents of the girls visiting you won’t like it, than why not make them out of the free fabric you scored? Just an idea.

Me: I have to make 19..it will take me too long plus my fabric cutting skills suck!

    • roisin says:

you need to invest in a really good pair of fabric scissors that dont get used by the kids to cut anything, my mother would go ballistic if we even touched her fabric scissors when we were small! anyway, it makes ALL the difference in the world to cutting fabric.

Me: I do have one but I think it was used for other purposes as well. My neighbour lent me her rotary cutter and mat. I havent used it YET but I think that one will go much better.

  14. M says:

Sorry, looks like I am the voice of dissent here :) To answer your question about origins: This project (tank-top to bag) is *very* well known among people who sew, so if any of the invitees’ has parents who sew, they’ll know the origin for sure.

Me: Hmm.. good point. Will see what happens …

That said, the bags are cute enough that it shouldn’t matter that they know it was a tank top before…I assume they don’t know or won’t care that the tank tops are thrifted.

Me: Right. Ashwina loves it and she thinks I am a very cool mom :)

Personally, I find this pattern of limited use – the bags are too floppy – I prefer tote-bags with a base, but girls your daughter’s age will probably enjoy the whole activity – not just the decoration….let them choose the tanktop, cut it, you sew it into bags, and then they get to decorate.

Me: Hmm That will be too much for a pain. I am having it downstairs in the dining hall and I dont want to drag the machine. We brought the bags to the library to test out and they stretched and stretched which was kind of annoying to me but to an 11 yr old its cool.

  15. M says:

Oh and BTW, if you are looking for plain flipflops – Dollar Tree has plenty…

  16. roisin says:

just make a point of saying its a green party theme, recycling is in now S!!!!! I think its cool and just go for it, also they dont have to be for books, they could be dance bags or gym bags or swim bags, then the stretching isnt really an issue!

Me: Ashwina really loves it so I am guessing 11 yr old girls will love it no matter what!

  17. Clueless says:

OK…I just bought a sewing machine and all bloggers suddenly seem to be taking up sewing projects!! Me thinks this is a perfect first project to test out the machine…Thanks!

Me: NICE! I think its because we are all very cool and need to be doing the latest in things..rofl

And what a lovely way to give out gifts / party favors! So eco friendly!

  18. anon says:

i think its a superb idea but i personally think would be slightly against this idea. if i was given a thrifted bag to decorate i dont think i would really like it although it is pretty creative and would make it for myself out of my own clothes. why don’t you try some other craft? or i dunno if you and ashwina are fine with it i guess its ok.

Me:waves hello. She is really into it. So I am going to with it. I will look for new tank tops with tags if I find any really.

  19. Sands says:

way cool. I think it is a great idea :)

  20. Guddi says:

Absolutely cool, S! When my cuz was lil and he peed in all the clothes his parents got when they visited us (non diaper days), I finally used a plastic bag, slit the bottom to open it out and used the handles as sleeves, his body going through the bag and his legs coming out from the bottom slit end! Creative you think, Goddess?? :)

    Me: rofl.. Yes..very creative.

  21. choxbox says:

If I were the mom in Q, I’d think you are very cool!

And that pic is the cutest!

  22. Beaulotus says:

    You are amazing…

    Me:Awww..Thanks BL

  23. Chooch says:

    V.v cool n creative and that model!…oooooh;))

  24. bini says:

Awesome..Loved it..Im thinking the linen tanks might stretch out more while the more polyester kinds a little less? just a thought/suggestion..Very creative..Now bine**Runs to buy sewing machine**

  25. Avanti Sane says:

omg sunita…i have also been on a sewing obsession these days…my problem is that most stuff off the racks doesnt fit me and alterations are too expensive here…i was thinking of buying a small 30 dollar mini ssewing machine for hemming etc…but the more i trawled the net abt sewing the more fascinated i got…maybe i’ll buy a nice sewing machine and get started too…do you have any sewing blog links? if so please pass them on..

Me: You can get a really nice one for less than $100 if you use coupons and such. A friend was saying Costco has one $150. A Singer or Brother. Both will last you and you can do alot with them.

  26. sakshi says:
