Monday Moneysavers

It was a interesting sale on Friday. I am on good terms with a lot of estate sale companies. I am on 2 private estate sale lists(where the company doesnt publish the details of the sale to the public but a select few dealers, the reason being that they feel the contents of the house are not enough to generate enough interest for a public sale. from what I hear its tough to get on such “list” and I have only being doing this such a short time).

Last Friday(12/9), I went to this sale where there were tons and tons of fabric and craft items and what not. I spent 2 hours there. However the company running the sale told me I have to come to their next sale. That sale has tons of wire rusted stuff which I buy for Alameda. But that sale was going to be 2 hours aways. I told the owner of that company, even if I came, I wouldn’t be on the list to get said items.
She then said, you email me and I will put you on the list. Just show before the sale opens.

Fast forward to this Friday(12/16), I dropped the kids and droved about 60 miles to said sale. I reached there at 945 and was number #19. I didnt see my name on the list. I thought, its okay.. I will still get in the first wave.

At 10.00 a/m, the sale opens, and the estate sale helper(Bill) says SUNITA PLEASE COME TO THE FRONT OF THE LINE> YOU ARE NUMBER 1.

I kid you not, there was huge gasp of shock? awe? jealousy? I dont know what. Anyways, I run to the front and he tells me where the junky stuff is and I buy the following.

I then go into the house and start looking through piles. I am then rudely interrupted by this dealer(who I saw last month at Alameda and in general was a an ass) He comes to me and said why did they let you in first? I came at 7 and signed and was number 10, why are you are first. Did you start another list?

I got flustered and said yes I came yesterday. He goes and then comes back, asks me am I sure. Just then Bill comes and I said you know what. Ask Bill. He ask Bill. And Bill said why does it matter. You all got to come in right? Whats the problem. That dealer still continues to pester Bill. Bill then replies, Go ask the person running the sale, I just do as my boss tells me.

That ass-dealer went to the owner. I didnt follow. However, he then refuses to look at me and I swear everyone was about to lynch me. I hid in the garage and found these. One of them sold on ebay. Click on the pic to be brought to the link.

I spent 3 hours at that sale and spent $250. When I was paying, I chatted with the owner and told her everyone was about ready to kill me. She said” you know what, people are crazy, you are a loyal buyer and I like dealing with you. And its not like you bought the whole house, everyone came in at the same time” Just ignore them”

I paid and left. But I still feel  kinda guilty like I did this huge wrong thing. I should let go of it but still. Your opinions? Moving along to my finds

I found this cart 2 hours into the sale. It was buried under a pile of fabric in the garage.

Reproductions from the 50s-60s.

More garden stuff

MCM Telephone stand

SixBallons, a copco Kettle. I also found a copco butter warmer at the thrift store that night.

A trio of ceramic Owls.

Btw, all pictures are from the new iPhone. I have forgiven NK about $300 worth. It is making my life easier. I have been taking pictures with it, it streams to iCloud and I use my iPad and Igaragesale to list on Ebay. Next on my list might be an iMac. :)

Monday Moneysaver/ Alameda Faire Update

Has it almost been a month since my last post? Wow. So many things to update on. I am going to do a random bullet point update.

2 fridays ago(the friday before Alameda, I went to a private estate sale, where I spied this dresser. A Broyhill Scupltra. I asked how much and it was a fair price. However I couldnt bring it with me. If I took it to the car then I would have no way of unloading by myself. The company running the sale would only be there till 1. I had no way of returning.  Another dealer who I shall call A(he sells at Alameda and is someone I run into all the time) was there. He offered to bring it to his house and I could swing the next day and pick it up.(he lives very close to me) [background story about A, he is a very savvy dealer. Been in the antique reselling business for 30 yrs old, male about 60 yrs or so. He has been selling at Alameda for 12 yrs or so].

Nk and I left Saturday morning to get the dresser. He showed me his impressive garage and the amazing banana boxes storage he has. He spoke to NK about something. As we walking out, he calls me

A: Sunita, can I ask your opinion on something?

Me: Sure what is it?

NK: A, why are you asking her? She has only been doing this for 6 months. You have so much more experience.

A: Thats what is so impressive. She only has been doing it 6 months and she knows so much. She is able to sell at Alameda and came back with good money. She is very very smart!

Me: HA! You tell him!

The thing he wanted my opinion on. A bar cart. I told him what I thought and we loaded the dresser and left.

I told NK what did you think about A said. Just because I make it look easy doesnt mean any Tom, Dick or Jane can do it.

NK has somewhat grudgingly accepted that what I do is “real work” and not whatever he thinks he is.

The dresser sold at Alameda. As did all the ceramic Xmas trees.

I was kinda worried about doing Alameda this time. My inventory was running low. I didnt have my big item. however, the Thursday and Friday before the sale, I hit 2 estate sales where I scored tons of goodies. I had 8 Hoop chairs. These (I think) are from Homecrest. They fold up  and were pretty sturdy.

I found the birdcage at another estate sale. The chairs sold, the 2 doves sold, those dolls I finally found what are they called. Joan Walsh Anglund. 3 different buyers informed of how they had these dolls and the books with them

I found this bar cart at another thrift store.

The lower 2 tiers swing it. In fantastic condition. A young couple walked up. The girl asked the price and then looked at her boyfriend(?)

She:What do you think? Should we get it?

He: Its up to you. I will support you in whatever you chose.

When he said that, both Sandi and I sighed and said ohh thats so sweet. I told her if he is a boyfriend she must hold onto him. She told me that they are husband and wife and have been married for 5 years. They married young. How awesome is that. I told her I married young and am still married to the same guy.

I brought my special 1930s globe. I didnt want to sell it per say. I put a high price on it and someone offered me $5 less than I was asking. She wanted it for her son’s room. I said bye bye to the globe. Sob Sob

My collection of Owls,

The biggest one is a cookie jar with a sugar and creamer set. That sold. The cutting board sold.

The teepee that was in my living room for a good month or so made its way to the faire. It sold to someone who has a 2 boys and she is going to use it in their room as a reading corner.

I am most likely NOT going to sell  next month. First Sunday is Jan 1st and I really dont know how the crowd is going to be. Though I am going to a really awesome estate sale this Friday and I *might* change my mind.

I turn 34

I turn 34 today. I don’t really need gifts. Everything I want need , I can buy or thrift.
NK is well known for buying me stuff that is completely unrelated to what I like. Like $110 nail polish from Nordstrom, or giving me $32.55 for my previous birthday( because that’s all the cash he had in his wallet)

Yesterday though he told me what he got for us( notice not me but US)

He went out and ordered us the iPhone 4s. Which normally would evoke feelings of joy and excitement because I love shiny new gadgets. LOVE. But the thing is, we are in a 2 contract with tmobile, the only cellphone company not with the iPhone. To get the iPhones, he went ahead and cancelled our current contracts which will be $200 per line, mine, his and our oldest child’s.

Which to me is like throwing $600 down the toilet. I like the iPhone but but it’s not worth the extra $600.

I am trying not to be angry about this. We can afford that money but why to waste?. My thrifty heart is bleeding.

Last night, we were watching Aisha. I told him if i was turning 24 and he was my boyfriend and he did this for my birthday. I would be thrilled to bits, that hey my boyfriend loves me so much, look he bought me an iPhone. But I am not 24 and we are married with 4 kids.

I told him I am still upset about it and he told me to go write it down on the blog and never to mention it again.

He has been reading the Steve jobs book and I think he was possessed by the spirit to go and do this. I told him I would never be able to enjoy Siri because each time I use her, I would see $600 floating in front of me.

So dear readers your take on this? Chalk it down to stuff that happens in marriage and one should let go and not worry and enjoy the new iPhone? Happy birthday to me.

Monday Moneysavers

The kids and NK and Friday off. NK decided we needed a quick get away. he booked us a hotel stay for 2 nights. I had a lot of stuff to catch up on and we left late Friday afternoon. And we drove both cars. I wanted to hit estate sales the next morning.

(side convo I had with NK, if I wasnt bringing in the money I am, would he have been okay with us driving both cars. He smiled and said No. So its not love, its just $$$ that talks)

I hit 3 estate sales. One was just a garage sale disguised as an estate sale. I bought 4 cast iron skillets there

Drove to another house which was on a golf course. Fantastic house with a huge swimming pool. They had a 3ft tall Buddha which they were asking $300. I love Buddhas but not that much.I bought a bunch of Xmas stuff from that house.

Then drove to house no 3. The ad stated that one should come prepared with face masks since everything was so dusty. Owner had collected owls. I bought these three.

The smallest one is a wooden coin bank.

This heavy bird bath.

Evil 60s Santa with Bambi and elves. I had to buy him as well

More Mason jars. I see these pretty quickly at Alameda.

Alameda Update

Another successful market. This one had me slightly scared. The weather forecast called for rain/showers. The show has a rollover policy but they decided to hold the faire as usual.

When we were setting up, a lot of booths were empty. It was cloudy and cold but still no rain.

This is my Christmas set up. I sold quite a bit of Xmas.

There was no rain. And because there were less dealers, there were more shoppers to go around. Does that make sense. Almost every dealer I spoke to, had an awesome sales day.

I sold this wonderful caddy and the bar cart it is sitting on. The caddy is going to a lady who is hosting a Mad Men party.

The bar cart went to a couple who recgonized me from my Twitter profile picture. And they read my blog. Only the 2nd time it has happened.

I also love shopping at the faire. I went and bought these chairs. I was going to bring them home.I had them in the booth and got some interest. So I turned around and sold them.A quick $50 profit in 40 mins.

I had to take the day off yesterday. I had a cold with running nose and sneezing and coughing. I went to bed at 830. Which is something I never do.

In other news, I won 2nd prize in my raffle. S0 close to the $500. I won an overnight stay and brunch for 2 at local boutique hotel.

The good and the bad

After 1.5 years of selling on Ebay, I still get a pang when I see a message from a buyer. Did they not like the item? Did I mess up their widget. Did I send something wrong? Most of the time, its things I can fix.If its lost, I try to track it down. If I can’t, I refund and file a insurance claim. I changed my policy and am accepting returns. Its a whole long reason why but I just updated my TOS.

However, once in a while, I get a nice letter. A personal thank you for my prompt shipping or careful packaging. This morning, I got this in my messages

I have no question. I just wanted to thank you for letting me have this item at a lower price. I have been looking for this item for a very very long time. There have been other sellers but they are asking way too much for it. I found it a flea market once for $10.00. I used to wear this fragrance when my husband and I were dating and he used to love it. We have now been married for 22 years so thank you thank you thank you again!!!!

Made my day. Happy Wednesday

Happy Halloween

I dressed up as well. Took the kids out by myself, came home, PJ, dinner, count candy, consume 3 pieces of candy each, brush teeth and all 4 were in bed  by 9p/m. NK is taking a class on Mondays and doesnt get back till 10 or so.

Not only that, I also opened a store on etsy Asaaan on etsy.  I currently have only 3 listings up and am still working on my wording and policy. My empire is growing. LOL. I feel like such a super mom.

Stitch

Thor

All costumes in these pictures have been thrifted. The axe is from our Skunk train ride. The Gorilla was from Goodwill. Avasha’s costume is a 1950′s ballerina costume. Ashwina tutu is 3 yrs old. I had bought it from a local photographer. It will passed onto my niece next I think.

Monday Moneysavers

I went to 3 estate sales on Friday. All 3 started at 10 a/m. I chose one closest to me. I bought 3 things from there. Then I raced 5 miles down and found this sale much better. I spent $45.
A vintage sewing caddy/ organizer.

I also got a bunch of Xmas stuff from this. Sewing patterns all which need to be listed . I found this globe behind some boxes. Paid $1 for it. Its missing the base but still very cool. I have yet to date it.
I then left for the 3rd sale where I bought plants for my self.
I found this wire basket for holding fruits on Tues? Wed?

Got the new Steve Jobs book for NK fo Diwali present.
This upcoming week looks to be just as insane. I am going to work really hard Mon/Tues to get as many listings as possible while the kids are in school. I have been really slacking and I need to list my inventory and get ready for upcoming Xmas season.Xmas, who has done their shopping? Not me!
